BMW Z1 – overview
The BMW Z1 is a two-seater BMW Z Series roadster (“Z” stands for “Zukunft”, which translates from German as "future"), the limited production of which took place from 1989 to 1991. Designed by BMW Technik GmbH, the model was literally ahead of its time. It had removable plastic body panels (buyers were offered a spare set of panels), unique vertical sliding doors, and a multi-link rear suspension. And although the Z1 did not become very popular, as it was too unusual, it served as an excellent testing ground for progressive technologies, which later found application in more familiar models from BMW.
