Mazda Cosmo generations

The Mazda Cosmo is the first production car with a rotary engine. The prototype was presented in 1964 at the Tokyo Motor Show. Serial production of a two-seater sports coupe, called the 110S, with a rotary engine, modified under license from the German company NSU, began in 1967. To prove the reliability of the rotary engine, the Cosmo entered the 84-hour race at the Nürburgring in Germany and came fourth. In Japan, those who had rotary engines received advantages in paying transport taxes, so the car was a huge success in its homeland. The Mazda Cosmo was sold as the Mazda RX-5 in other countries.
