Introduced in 1952, the Mercedes-Benz W191 became one of the modernized versions for the 170 S, a series of luxury cars produced from 1949 to 1955. The letter "S" meant "Sonder modell" or "Special Model", hinting at the highest level of comfort and quality. Thus, the Mercedes-Benz 170 S was intended for successful business owners and company executives. The gasoline version of the W191 was produced only as a 4-door sedan. The car was distinguished by a gear shifter located on the steering column. The starter button was on the dashboard. There was also a diesel version, quite rare for the era of gasoline "monsters". The loss of diesel engine power affected the demand from the elitists, for which the car was designed. However, executives of companies that preferred fuel-efficient cars and elite taxi operators highly appreciated the Mercedes-Benz 170 ds for reducing fuel consumption by almost 25%.
