AMC or American Motors Corporation is an American automaker that existed from 1954 to 1987. Incorporated by the merger of the two companies, AMC output compact subcompact cars and decently competed with the Big Detroit Three. Its very first AMC car, Rambler, ranked No.3 among the most popular cars in the United States. This was followed by sports cars Javelin and AMX, Jeep off-roaders and the world's first SUV AMC Eagle. After AMC was acquired by Renault, only Eagle and Jeep remained afloat. After the sale of AMC to Chrysler Corporation in 1987, AMC ceased its operations in the United States with Jeep and Eagle becoming standalone subsidiaries of Chrysler.
