ARO (Romania) manufactured its first car based on the Soviet GAZ-69 off-roader in 1957. It was followed by the armored car ABI created in 1979 based on ARO 240. ARO was rightfully considered a major manufacturer of four-wheel drive off-road vehicles and light trucks with 90% of its total output being exported to more than 100 countries. ARO has manufactured a total of about 380,000 vehicles throughout its existence. ARO was sold in the UK as Dacia Duster, as ARO Trapeurs in France and as ARO Ischia in Italy. Unfortunately, the manufacturing of ARO branded cars has been suspended since 2006.
