In 1916, the Danish engineer Jorgen Rasmussen set up a small business using public funds granted by the German authorities to manufacture cars called "DKW” and powered by a steam engine. However, the first DKW car appeared only in 1928. Until that time, DKW was Germany's largest motorcycle manufacturer. At some point, DKW’s front-wheel drive F-series became the most mass-produced German car. The history of the brand continued after the Second World War up until 1966 when all DKW production facilities were transferred to Volkswagen corporate group.
