The American automobile brand Saturn established in 1985 by General Motors had a single mission of competing with Japanese cars that were rapidly gaining popularity. Saturn had its own assembly line and a standalone sales network that was independent from other GM brands. Despite the fact that Saturn cars were extremely very popular with buyers, the number of cars sold was incomparably small versus the optimistic forecasts. At the same time, Saturn approached the Japanese market in 1997 and two million cars had been assembled by 1999. However, GM announced its decision to part with the Saturn brand in 2009.
