A flame arrester is installed instead of the defective catalyst. In this case, the flame arrester, provided that it is correctly installed, makes the engine significantly more efficient. The catalyst removal procedure involves removing the refractory sheath, opening the catalyst housing and removing the contents. The flame arrester is installed instead of the catalyst and the cut-out elements of the catalyst housing are fixed in place by welding. After that, the engine control unit is reprogrammed.
