The piston rings need to be replaced in the following cases: a sudden compression drop, an increase in fuel and oil consumption, engine starting problems, gray exhaust smoke, and heavy smoke from the crankcase ventilation hole. To replace the rings, the oil pan is removed, the oil pump is dismantled, the connecting rod caps are removed, the sealing parts are removed and then the oil scraper rings and the compression rings are installed.
