The American car brand DeSoto was developed by Chrysler specifically to compete with General Motors in the mid price range. DeSoto cars that were named after the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto and manufactured between 1928 and 1961 have become virtually the standard of the American taxi car. However, later on Chrysler decided to position DeSoto as a mid-to-high price car competing with General Motors' Buick. DeSoto coped with this task with dignity. After the 1958 economic crisis outbroke, DeSoto's sales dropped by almost 80% which predetermined the abolition of the brand.
