Founded in 2001 by the Chinese state defense conglomerate Norinco, Jiangnan Automobile acquired the rights to produce the Suzuki Alto hatchback from Suzuki, with the aim of manufacturing an affordable and high-quality car in China. The Chinese-made Alto ultimately became the most budget-friendly vehicle in the People's Republic of China, and Jiangnan gained popularity in the domestic market thanks to its unpretentious yet incredibly affordable cars. In 2007, Zotye purchased the production line, continuing to manufacture the economical Alto until 2021. In 2023, the brand's first electric vehicle made its debut - the U2 hatchback.
