Proton Edar Sdr Holding is Malaysia's largest national automaker. Initially, its models were created by upgrading Mitsubishi cars and only later on Proton proceeded to the development of its own original cars. During the European crisis in the early ‘90s, ultra-cheap "Malaysian Mitsubishi" cars were sold off very successfully. And then, by 2008, Proton had already released its 3 millionth car. It was the second-generation Saga model. Proton’s cooperation with another Japanese manufacturer, Mazda, made Proton cars not only the best sellers in the Malaysian automotive market but also made them extremely popular in Europe.
