Toyota Sports 800 – overview
The Toyota Sports 800 is the first mass-produced sports car from Toyota. It was based on the Toyota Public Sports model, unveiled at the 1962 Tokyo Motor Show. The sports car was produced in coupe or roadster bodies. The car owed its small weight to the use of aluminum in the body. In 1965, the car went into mass production. It featured an engine with a volume ranging from 700 to 800 cc, as well as a two-barrel carburetor that generated 45 hp. This engine accelerated the car up to 70 km/h in the city and up to 160 km/h on the race track. The Sports 800 became a kind of testing ground for Toyota technologies. In 1979, the manufacturer released the Sports 800 Gas Turbine Hybrid prototype based on the Toyota Sports 800.
