The Serbian automaker Zastava founded in 1953 was a joint project between Fiat and the Serbian government that started out by releasing licensed Fiat models under its own name, Zastava. In the 1990s, the production was almost completely shut down due to the Serbian war and the plant was destroyed. Only in 2003, Zastava resumed the manufacturing of an analogue of the Fiat Punto. Five years later, Serbia sold Zastava to Fiat and the brand ceased to exist.
