In 1928, the renowned American designer Walter Chrysler founded the Plymouth brand to create a car that could compete with Ford and General Motors. The name “Plymouth” was invented by Joe Fraser, the vice president of Chrysler, who considered it a "nice old American name" that also echoed the name of the Plymouth binder twine that acquired a very high reputation among American farmers which allowed creating positive associations with such qualities as strength, durability and reliability. The Plymouth emblem for many years was substantially a stylized image of the “Mayflower”, the ship on which the Founding Fathers arrived in America and drop the anchor by Plymouth Stone. Plymouth that had been making motor cars and minivans for many decades existed until 2001.
