Soueast Motor (SEM) is a Taiwanese automaker whose name is inspired by geography and comes from South East. The company was founded in 1995. Like almost any Chinese automaker, Soueast Motor started with the production of licensed cars, using Mitsubishi models as a benchmark. Moreover, the Soueast brand produced its own cars and cars based on Japanese models. However, the manufacturer switched to producing only its own models with time. Of course, everyone is well aware that Taiwan is located in the Southeast and that the relationship between Taiwan and mainland China is very complicated.
But few people know that Soueast acts as a kind of ‘friendship bridge’, since its shares are owned simultaneously by Chinese (50%) and Taiwanese (25%) founders, the remaining 25% is owned by Mitsubishi Motors (Japan). SEM sells its products not only on the domestic market, but also in China. And few people know that J.D. Power recognized Soueast cars as one of the most reliable in China, along with much more famous brands.
What is there to know about Southeast Motor (SEM)?
Southeast Motor (SEM) was founded in 1995. Taiwan’s largest automaker was formed after the merger of China’s Fujian Motor Industry Group Co. and Taiwan’s China Motor Corporation. The enterprise has cooperated with 35 Taiwanese auto parts suppliers to form a successful production and servicing system. Currently, the company cooperates with 256 suppliers.
SEM used Mitsubishi engine technology as a basis for production. At present, the production cycle combines stamping, welding, painting, assembly and inspection lines. The company became the first automotive enterprise to comply with ISO9001:2000 and ISO14001:2004 quality system certification and 3C (China Compulsory Certification).

In October 2008, SEM released its first model. It was a V3 LingYue compact sedan. A month later, the company began the production of the Mitsubishi Zinger body-on-frame minivan based on the first generation Pajero. In November 2009, the manufacturer launched the Mitsubishi Lancer. And in 2011, SEM created its own automotive research institute, which fastened the process: the second car was the V5 LingZhi sedan (September 2012), the third was the SEM V6 LingShen hatchback (April 2013), which acquired a crossover version in a year.
Model range
Soueast Motor’s model range currently comprises several SUVs and one sedan, as well as a Delica electric van based on a model from another manufacturer, King Long. The name passed from Mitsubishi.
In 2016, the manufacturer introduced the DX3 SUV designed by Pininfarina, featuring the elements of the ‘hawk’s wings’ corporate style. In 2019, the DX5 SUV was released. The models were built on the Mitsubishi platform and kept on being modernized. The DX3 was restyled in 2018, while the DX5 received an electric version with a driving range of up to 351 km.
In 2020, the company introduced the second generation DX7 SUV (the first generation was released in 2014) and the new DX9. The first has a body length of 4.6 m and is equipped with a 1.5-liter (156 hp) or 1.8-liter (197 hp) turbocharged engine, a manual or robotic dual-clutch gearbox. The 4.9 m long DX9 SUV features a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with 245 hp. Both vehicles are richly equipped and look stylish.
The brand’s most affordable car is the 4,588 mm long A5 sedan. It has been produced since 2018, as a replacement for the V5, and is sold at a price of 52.9-78.9 thousand yuan. The car is equipped with a 1.5-liter Mitsubishi 4A91 MIVEC engine and manual gearboxes or CVTs.
