More than a German car
The Opel Crossland X is a subcompact SUV, which has been produced by Opel (Germany) since 2017. In 2021, Israeli buyers could purchase the first generation SUV, restyled in 2020 (as of 2021).
The first generation
It has been produced from 2017 to the present (as of 2021). The online presentation of the Opel Crossland X took place on January 18, 2017. The model is based on the French modular platform EMP2. This is the first result of cooperation between General Motors and PSA. The Crossland has obtained Opel’s signature style and numerous modern electronic devices. In March 2017, the vehicle officially debuted at the Geneva Motor Show.
The Opel Crossland X is an SUV, similar in size to the Opel Mokka, but more practical and less sporty. Its urban image is emphasized by the lack of all-wheel drive; the manufacturer also expects to attract buyers of the retired Opel Meriva compact van.
Exterior
The Crossland is designed in compliance with Opel’s signature style. As a result, the vehicle looks fresh, stylish and expressive. A protective body kit made of unpainted plastic around the perimeter of the body and a ground clearance of 200 mm make this compact SUV look more solid. It is only 4,212 mm long, 1,605 mm high and 1,825 mm wide. The wheelbase is 2,604 mm.
The front face is decorated with narrowed LED headlights, and the black radiator grille features Opel’s logo and a pair of long lines, similar to the wings of a seagull gliding in the wind. The LED taillights are very pretty and quirky. The vehicle has a very dynamically-looking profile, especially the two-tone version.
Interior
The SUV’s interior has the same recognizable strict style of the German brand: a laconic center console, featuring an 8-inch multimedia system screen and an elegant climate control unit. A multifunctional three-spoke steering wheel and an analog instrument panel complete the overall picture of good quality and tranquility.
The front seats of the small 2017/2018 Opel Crossland X are certified by AGR (Healthy Back Campaign) and provide excellent comfort and a wide range of adjustments. The rear passengers can enjoy not only a comfortable backseat, but also an unexpected spaciousness, which is achieved by an ingenious solution: the backseat can move back and forth by 150 mm.
The trunk of the Crossland is also quite good, offering a standard volume of 410 liters. If you move the second row of seats as far forward as possible, then the volume of the compartment will increase to 520 liters, and if you fold it down to the floor, up to 1,255 liters.
Powertrains and chassis
The small SUV has a lot of engines: a 1.2-liter petrol naturally aspirated three-cylinder distributed injection engine, which produces 83 hp. A more productive turbocharged direct injection engine generates 110 or 130 hp. There are also 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder engines with Common Rail injection generating 110 or 120 hp.
The base petrol engine is coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, while all other versions (except for the top-end diesel one) are equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox. A 6-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission is also installed on the vehicle. Four-wheel drive is not provided, which is partially compensated for by the optional IntelliGrip system that controls the operation of traction control electronics (all five modes - Normal, ESP Off, Snow, Sand and Mud).
The new Opel Crossland X is built on the PSA PF1 front-wheel drive platform, or rather its shortened version. Therefore, the front suspension is independent MacPherson strut, and the rear suspension is a torsion beam semi-independent suspension. Transverse stabilizers are installed at the front and rear. The vehicle has disc brakes on both axles (front ones are ventilated) and a rack and pinion steering system with an electric booster.
Equipment
The SUV has the widest range of modern equipment: 6 airbags, adaptive LED headlights, blind spot monitoring system, IntelliGrip system, head-up display, automatic braking system, parking assistant and much more.
2020 restyling
At the beginning of October 2020, the vehicle underwent a planned restyling and stopped having the ‘X’ prefix in its name in most markets. The main thing is that it was ‘refreshed’. The interior was slightly adjusted and became more functional. As for technical upgrades, the restyled 2020/2021 Opel Crossland is equipped with a modernized steering shaft, new shock absorbers and springs in the suspension. The power range remains the same.
