2019 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup. 4th generation
The Chevrolet Silverado is a full-size pickup that has been produced since 1999 and has existed for four generations and two complete restylings. It is available in two-door and four-door configurations, with front, rear and all-wheel drive. It is extremely popular in the United States, but has earned great respect in other countries as well. In 2019, the manufacturer introduced the fourth generation pickup that can currently be purchased in Israel (as of 2021). Let’s find out more details about the new Silverado.
The fourth generation Chevrolet Silverado pickup is practically a different car as compared to the previous generations. The entry-level model is only available in the 1500 configuration. The production of heavy models continued with the 2500 and 3500 versions. The basic concept of a working, but comfortable pickup, has not changed. In Israel, the vehicle comes with a one-and-a-half and double cabs.
Design
The new Chevrolet Silverado looks like a true American large pickup truck with an immense radiator grille that looks as if it is not one radiator grille, but three at once, one above the other. The designers have probably tried to smooth out the exaggeratedly gigantic cubic front end a bit and made the cockpit lines a little smoother. It did not help. Compared to the body, the cab looks too huge in any configuration, and the hood is actually higher than the body sides.
According to J.D. Power, middle-aged men (over 55 years old) make up 90% of those who own this vehicle.
Nevertheless, the 2019/2020 Silverado remains a real practical pickup with a full body kit. For example, it has a variety of trailer assist technologies, including a trailer length indicator to help the driver safely change lanes when towing, a cargo box viewing window that makes fifth wheel connection easier, and more. In any case, if the owner needs to demonstrate his masculinity, brutality and coolness, then the fourth generation Silverado is perfect. And that’s why, according to J.D. Power middle-aged men (over 55 years old) make up 90% of those who own this vehicle. And 90% of these 90% identify themselves as proud patriots of the United States of America and fans of the domestic automotive industry.
Engines and chassis
The 2020/2021 Chevrolet Silverado comes with a wide choice of powertrains, including a V6, two V8s, a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine. The most powerful of them is a6.2-liter 8-cylinder engine with 420 hp, which accelerates this very massive pickup from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. However, the power of any power unit is sufficient, providing decent traction in any Silverado configuration, including the off-road Trail Boss version.
The engines are accompanied by a 10-speed automatic transmission. In 2020, the pickup got an additional fuel-efficient Duramax diesel engine with high torque. With the most powerful engine, the towing capacity of the pickup is enormous and is as much as 6 tons, and as a truck Silverado can transport about a ton of cargo.
Interior and options
The new Chevrolet Silverado has a utilitarian and ungraceful interior, but quite comfortable for work, rest and offering many options. The driver’s seat is rated as very comfortable and has 10 adjustment positions. At the same time, there is enough space for passengers, including the rear ones, as the cabin is spacious, and even a tall adult can stretch out in any plane to their full height.
The vehicle has a high-quality climate system, excellent ventilation, as well as heated front seats and steering wheel. Ventilated seats are available as an option. At the same time, the standard 7-inch infotainment screen for a modern large pickup is considered too small and even the optional 8-inch display looks microscopic on a huge, modular and crowded dashboard. But there are all the signs of modern life: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Chevrolet Connected Services, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, USB ports, SiriusXM satellite radio. Interestingly, the Bose premium sound system is adapted for heavy music, as the manufacturer has probably taken into account the interests of the target audience, which does not listen to any high-pitched nonsense.
The new Silverado has plenty of storage space for everything from double glove compartments and small drawers hidden behind the rear seat back cushions, to oversized drawers on the door panels and a large center console with rails for hanging file folders.
As befits a vehicle used for work, the new Silverado has plenty of storage space for everything from double glove compartments and small drawers hidden behind the rear seat back cushions, to huge drawers in the door panels and a large center console with rails for hanging file folders.
Safety
Despite the excessively harsh appearance, the 2021/2022 Chevrolet Silverado is a really safe vehicle due to the initially strong and high-quality design, which has been like that from the very first generation. But it also has such modern safety options as:
- Forward Collision Warning System
- Automatic Emergency Braking;
- Blind Spot Monitoring System;
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert;
- Lane Departure Warning System;
- Lane Keeping Assist.
The pickup has impressive crash test ratings (maximum) from the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
HD versions
In 2019, the manufacturer introduced two new heavy models of the Chevrolet Silverado: 2500 HD and 3500 HD. They are equipped with a Duramax V8 engine with an output of over 400 hp and options for enhancing the trailer operation, which in total provides the ability to tow up to 16.3 tons. Heavy duty pickups are equipped with a 10-speed gearbox. The 3500 HD has dual rear wheels and reinforced suspension elements that add power capabilities (this is exactly the kind of pickup that can tow more than 16 tons of cargo).
The cab of the new heavyweight models is placed on a longer wheelbase than the previous generation. The vehicles come with heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, head-up display and much more. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 models have a large internal storage compartment. In general, the new technological options and functions of the heavy Silverado are the same as for the entry-level 1500. However both heavyweight versions are harder and stiffer in the operation.
