2019 Jeep Gladiator Pickup. 2nd generation
The Jeep Gladiator is a mid-size pickup manufactured by the Jeep division of Stellantis North America (formerly FCA USA). The second generation went on sale in the spring of 2019. Although this generation is considered the second, in essence, it is the first, since the pickup was reborn after a long oblivion.
The new Gladiator is a body-on-frame pickup with rigid, durable axles, very useful in difficult conditions. Such vehicles can successfully withstand severe tests and faithfully serve their owner for a long time. First of all, the 2019/2020 Jeep Gladiator was created for active recreation and entertainment in nature, in contrast to the first generation, which was produced in the second half of the last century and was an ordinary ‘workhorse’.
Exterior
The new Jeep Gladiator is based on the Wrangler SUV. However, the new model has become significantly longer. Thus, the pickup is 5,539 mm long, which is 657 mm more than that of its ‘brother’. The wheelbase is also longer than that of the Wrangler: 3,487 mm versus 3,008 mm. The rear overhang has also become longer. The length of the pickup cargo platform is 1,531 mm, and it is able to accommodate one cubic meter of luggage. The vehicle offers a double cab for 5 people, which it did not have before. The pickup looks similar to the base model and other models of the famous brand, possessing masculine features and harsh male beauty.
The manufacturers have taken into account the wishes of different groups of future owners. Consequently, the new pickup comes with a soft top and removable hard roof panels. In addition, all four doors can be unscrewed and removed in your garage, and the windshield, if desired, can be folded back onto the hood (greetings from the very distant past). The body has another feature aimed at reducing weight: the tailgate, doors, hinges, windshield frame and hood are made of aluminum. The vehicle is quite good for off-road conditions: high ground clearance (283 mm for the Rubicon version sold in Israel), and the ford depth for a standard version is 760 mm.
Interior
The 2020/2021 Jeep Gladiator has a modern and ‘masculine’ interior that boasts high-quality finishing materials (high-quality plastics, genuine leather, and aluminum). An upright multi-steering wheel with a three-spoke rim, a dashboard with two deep ‘wells’ and a colorful information display, a vertical center console that carries an 8.4-inch display of the media center and numerous keys. Overall, the interior leaves a predominantly positive impression.
The interior is really five-seater. The front seats are comfortable, with light lateral support and wide adjustment ranges. The second row is a well-profiled backseat with all the necessary amenities (pockets, USB connectors, cup holders). The backseat also folds in a 60:40 ratio, further increasing the vehicle’s carrying capacity.
Powertrains
The new Gladiator has one engine only. This is a V-shaped naturally aspirated or direct injection petrol engine with a variable valve timing system. This 3.6-liter 6-cylinder Pentastar engine produces 280 forces at 6400 rpm and 353 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. The engine works in tandem with a 6-speed manual transmission or 8-speed automatic transmission; the second version is available in Israel.
The pickup has not only four-wheel drive, but also a transfer case. The low range has a gear ratio of 4, which speaks of good traction. The vehicle features dependent suspensions at the front and at the rear, comprising indestructible continuous Dana axles on springs with anti-roll bars and (attention!) differential locks on both axles! The carrying capacity of the pickup in the configuration for Israel is 607 kg (in other versions it reaches 726), and the towed trailer can weigh up to 2,722 kg (in other versions, it reaches 3,470 kg). Fuel consumption is 12.4 l/100 km.
Equipment
In Israel, buyers can choose between the Rubicon and Rubicon S trim levels. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator features all-LED optics, a 7-inch Uconnect touchscreen media system with Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and ABS, EBD and new active safety systems. Depending on the version, these are: normal or adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring system, emergency autonomous braking, as well as airbags. For a surcharge, you can order automatic braking and blind spot monitoring systems, adaptive cruise control, and automatic switching from high beam to low beam.
