The Mitsubishi Space Star is a compact five-door hatchback manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors (Japan). The market currently offers the second generation, which debuted in 2012 (as of 2021). In 2019, it was restyled for the second time (the first restyling took place in 2016). The car is sold worldwide, more commonly known as the Mirage, and shares a platform with the Attrage sedan. In 2021, Israeli buyers can purchase the new Space Star with a 1.2 liter engine and a CVT.

Exterior and interior

In order to bring the ‘face’ of the new Mitsubishi hatchback in line with the signature Dynamic Shield style, it was required to replace its body parts. The ‘X-face’ features chrome curved overlays, in which you can see a reference to a Japanese katana blade, except that this sword is almost straight. The front face now looks more solid, and the overall length of the car has increased from 3,710 to 3,845 mm. The rear bumper has also been redesigned and the taillights now feature LED segments. By the way, the expensive versions also comprise the diode head lighting. When viewed in profile, the new 15-inch wheels are obvious.

As for interior changes, it is pleasant to see the new finishing materials and decor, as well as the carbon fiber inserts. The driver can now enjoy a new, more comfortable, folding armrest. The Android media system has an 8-inch screen.

Powertrains and chassis

The 2019/2020 Mitsubishi Space Star is equipped with a 1.2-liter MIVEC three-cylinder petrol engine, producing 71 hp. There are ‘Start-stop’ and Eco Drive Assist systems. In Israel, the car is supplied with a continuously variable transmission. The car consumes 5.4-5.5 liters of petrol per 100 km in the combined cycle.

The restyled compact car features a reconfigured suspension with the new shock absorbers and springs, larger front and rear brakes with more efficient pads. Recall that the car has an independent front suspension (MacPherson strut) and a semi-independent rear suspension (torsion beam).

Equipment and trim levels

There are three trim levels of the 2021 Mitsubishi Space Star for Israel: basic Instyle, medium Supreme and top-end Premium.

  • The basic trim level has a fully automatic air conditioning and power accessories. The list of equipment also includes a 4-speaker sound system, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and tilt steering. The rear seat folds down in parts. The hatchback comes as standard with front, side airbags, curtains for head protection (6 in total), an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and emergency braking assistance, electronic stability control and traction control, LDW (lane departure warning), rain sensor, cruise control and HSA hill start assist.
  • The Supreme version additionally has automatic high/low beam switching.
  • The top-end Premium offers keyless entry and engine start button, LED headlights, combined seats, made of artificial leather with fabric. Externally, the car can be recognized by the red stripes in the radiator grille.
