2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 5th generation
The Grand Cherokee is a luxury mid-size four-wheel drive SUV, produced since 1992 by the Jeep brand, an ‘off-road’ division of the Italian-American group Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Stellantis). Introduced on January 7, 2021, the fifth generation has retained the main features of the legendary model: prestige, unique and bold exterior, amazing off-road performance and purely American behavior on the highway. We will focus on this newcomer in our review.
Brief background
This model is very important for Jeep, because it is the flagship of the American brand, which dates back to 1989. It was then that the almost final first version of the Jeep Concept 1 was presented. Interestingly, the SUV initially had a monocoque body. The genius Lee Iacocca, who then ran the company, set a serious task, according to which an SUV was supposed to be not only capable of handling any road, but also comfortable and well-equipped. The presentation of the vehicle was very bright and spectacular: Chrysler president Bob Lutz drove the SUV, with Detroit mayor Coleman Young as his passenger, accompanied by police escorts. The Lutz drove the new Grand Cherokee up the stairs and smashed it through a glass window.
Exterior
In 2021, the manufacturer presented the three-row and 6- or 7-seater Grand Cherokee L. These models account for 70% of sales in America. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is built on a new platform comprising aluminum (the hood and fifth door are made of it) and high-strength steels, as well as modern security systems. The new model looks very stylish and recognizable. All lighting equipment is diode. The new Grand Cherokee L is noticeably larger than the previous model. The length has grown from 4,820 mm to 5,204 mm, and the wheelbase has grown from 2,916 mm to 3,091 mm. The track has been widened by 36 mm. The width and height have been increased quite a bit: 1,963 mm and 1,816 mm, respectively.
Interior
The modern interior features a 10.25-inch digital dashboard, head-up display and a rotating plate. The Uconnect 5 media system can have a touchscreen with a diagonal of 8.4 or 10.1 inches (depending on the trim level), supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But the climate control is still completely analogous.
The new Grande has seven or six seats. This means that the second row is either a three-seater backseat or separate seats. The interior contains as many as 12 USB connectors of two types (USB-A and USB-C). The minimum trunk volume is 484 liters or 1,328 liters with the third row seats folded down, and if you fold the second row, the trunk volume reaches 2,396 liters.
Powertrains
The new Jeep has inherited the initially good technical equipment of the old Grand Cherokee but with certain improvements. The engines are the same traditional American naturally-aspirated petrol units. At home, the vehicle will be offered with a V6 3.6 engine (294 hp, 348 Nm) or a more powerful V8 5.7 engine (362 hp, 529 Nm). Both are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
A set of all-wheel drive transmissions is still here. The base Quadratrac I includes a clutch in the front wheel drive, Quadratrac II is supplemented with a low range, and Quadra-Drive II also has a rear differential lock. In the US, there will also be the simplest rear-wheel drive versions. The Quadra-Lift air suspension, installed for an additional charge, provides 212 mm ground clearance in the standard position, when parked it can be reduced to 170 mm, and in difficult off-road conditions it can be increased to 277 mm! The ford depth has been increased to 610 mm (by 100 mm). The SUV is equipped with independent front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.
For Israel
In Israel, the 2021/2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be presented in the following trim levels: entry-level Laredo, Laredo Plus, expensive Limited, Limited PSR and off-road Trailhawk. All vehicles will receive a 3.6-liter engine, 8-speed automatic transmission and Quadratrac II or Quadra-Drive II systems, as well as Quadra-Lift air suspension. There will also be a 3L Multijet engine (238 hp).
