Chery Tiggo 9. Exploring the new Chery flagship
From February 23, 2023, the large 4.8-meter Chery Tiggo 9 SUV is officially the largest and most expensive model in Chery’s model range. Finally, the manufacturer unveiled the production SUV, which we already reviewed, mentioning that it looks very similar to the stylish Range Rover Velar. At the start of sales, the Tiggo 9 is offered in a 5-seater version, but later the range will be supplemented by a 7-seater version. The car has turned out to be very progressive: a trendy silhouette, a new platform with an autopilot, retractable door handles, etc. The newcomer will appear on sale in May 2023, the estimated price starts from 23,000 dollars. The Israeli market currently offers the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. Compared to it, the new Tiggo 9 is 10 cm longer, has a more modern appearance and is almost 100 hp more powerful. One of the car’s nearest "relatives" is the Exeed Yaoguang.
Exterior
The designers of the British brand Land Rover had a hand in the unusual exterior. This is not at all surprising, since Chery controls half of the assets of the joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover in China. Therefore, the new Chery Tiggo 9 is not a copy, but an original model with its own ‘face’. The car looks solid, expensive and large thanks to the monumentally designed radiator grille with vertical stripes. It is 4,820 mm long, 1,930 mm wide and 1,699 mm high. Thus, the Tiggo 9 is 98 mm longer, 70 mm wider and 6 mm lower than the Tiggo 8 Pro. The wheelbase, equal to 2,820 mm, exceeds that of the Tiggo 8 by as much as 110 mm. The car has received retractable door handles, rich trim levels with matrix headlights, and 20-inch wheels.
Interior
At the start of sales, the 2023 Chery Tiggo 9 was offered in a 5-seater version, which will be followed by a 7-seater version. Outwardly, the car resembles Jaguar crossovers or ‘younger’ Range Rovers, while its interior demonstrates the influence of Mercedes-Benz models. For example, the power buttons for the front seats have been moved to the doors, and the transmission, like that of the related Exeed Yaoguang, is controlled by assistance of the right steering column lever. There are only touch keys on the steering wheel and the central tunnel, the roof is panoramic, and there is a heads-up display. Finishing materials are very high quality, and all the decoration looks expensive. Moreover, the car boasts atmospheric lighting with 255 colors and a lot of heating deflectors that evenly disperse the air throughout the passenger compartment.
The flagship is the flagship: multimedia runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 SoC, complemented by a 5G modem and a Sony sound system with 14 speakers. The Tiggo 9's safety doesn’t disappoint either, thanks to a host of electronic assistants like fully automatic parking and adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition. Of special note is the optional CDC suspension with multiple modes of operation and automatic stiffness adjustment depending on the quality of the road.
Powertrains
The 2023 Chery Tiggo 9 is so far the first representative of the Chery brand built on the new M3X version of the Mars 2.0 platform. It is suitable for both gasoline and hybrid vehicles. There is only one engine offered so far: a modified 2.0-liter Kunpeng series turbocharged direct injection engine, producing 261 hp and 400 Nm. It is paired with an 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission and front or all-wheel drive. In the future, the manufacturer promises to release a hybrid version with a range of about 1,300 km, and the car will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.
