Jeep Wrangler is an all-wheel drive SUV from the Italian-American automaker, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, produced by the Jeep ‘Off-Road’ Division since 1986. Both 3-Door SUV and 5-Door SUV versions are available. Currently, there are already 4 generations of this legendary SUV on the market, the last of which is offered to Israeli buyers.

Jeep Wrangler is perhaps the most recognizable American vehicle. Its design is based on the 1941 Willys MB, which was created as a military vehicle for the US Army and the Allies during World War II. Essentially, the Wrangler is the successor to the Jeep CJ family, the civilian version of the Willys.

The first generation

The first generation Jeep YJ, named Wrangler, was produced from 1986 to 1996. The Jeep Wrangler YJ had a longer wheelbase than the Jeep CJ, which slightly reduced the SUV’s ground clearance but made it more comfortable. The first Wrangler actually did not differ much from its predecessor, it also used longitudinal springs in the wheel suspension, and the body was very similar to the previous one. At the same time, thanks to the upgraded design with rectangular headlights and the characteristic arrangement of the windscreen wipers, the first generation Wrangler became easily recognizable. For 10 years of production, the first Wrangler got an elongated safety cage, and the rear passengers could finally wear diagonal seat belts, plus it was equipped with an anti-lock braking system and automatic transmission. And 1995 was the only year when the Wrangler had a fully galvanized body and frame.

The second generation

The second generation Jeep Wrangler TJ was produced from 1996 to 2007. The second Wrangler featured spring wheel suspension similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which provided smoother travelling comfort and significantly improved steering response. The second generation jeep returned back to the classic round headlights in the Jeep CJ style. Plus, it was equipped with a fuel tank increased to 72 liters, side mirrors with black metal frames, and a 4-speed automatic transmission instead of a 3-speed one.

The third generation

The third generation Jeep Wrangler JK was produced from 2006 to 2018! It actually became a long-liver. Despite the fact that no restyling has ever been officially announced by the manufacturer, some changes and improvements were made to the third Wrangler every year. The rigidity of the frame on which the 3rd generation Wrangler is built increased by 100%, and the body - by 50% compared to the previous one. The JK’s engine was replaced by a new 6-cylinder V-engine from Chrysler. In 2011, the Jeep’s interior was completely redesigned, and in 2012, the old engine was replaced by a new, more powerful and economical Chrysler Pentastar engine. To improve safety, the 3rd generation Jeep Wrangler was equipped with electronic stability program ESP, 4-channel anti-lock braking system, electronic rollover prevention system. As a result, from 2007 to 2010, the Jeep Wrangler was awarded by the American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the highest five-star rating relating to the safety in frontal crashes for both driver and passenger.

The fourth generation

The fourth generation Jeep Wrangler JL has been produced from the end of 2017 to the present. The new Wrangler has remained faithful to traditions, but its interior and equipment have become much more advanced. All lighting equipment of the new Wrangler is based on LED elements. The front side lights are made as a ring inside the headlight. The new Jeep Wrangler retains the frame structure, but the unladen weight relative to the model of the outgoing generation has become smaller due to the increased use of high-strength steels and aluminum. Both the three-door and the five-door versions of the Wrangler are available on the Israeli market.

The 4th generation Wrangler has retained such utilitarian features as a hinged windshield and easily removable doors. The interior of the new Wrangler is also made in accordance with the traditions, but with the use of modern technologies. The dashboard is equipped with a larger multimedia system display, which has a special rubberized edging. And the dashboard has a waterproof engine start button.
