Volkswagen Caravelle Minivan. 6th generation, 2019 restyling
The Caravelle did not come out of the blue. It was born as a passenger version of the Volkswagen Transporter light commercial van. Its relevance is confirmed by its history: the first Caravelle cars left the stocks more than 30 years ago, and now the roads of the world are conquered by cars based on the sixth generation Transporter.
Exterior
The new Volkswagen Caravelle is a three-row minibus (minivan), so it cannot be small. It is 5,304 mm long, 1,904 mm wide and 1,970 mm high. The wheelbase is exactly 3 m. The car is designed in compliance with a modern interpretation of Volkswagen’s corporate style, for which it underwent restyling in 2019. The restyled car has acquired an enlarged grille and LED taillights.
Interior
After the restyling in 2019, the minivan can boast of a deeply changed interior. There are more pockets and niches for storing small items, documents and other things. The large double shelf under the windshield is equipped with a 12V socket. The driver and passenger seats are height adjustable and have armrests. Rear passengers will love the two side doors (with the ability to install power doors), and the driver will appreciate the original Composition Color sound system with a 6.5-inch color screen. The Climatronic 3-zone climate control ensures an optimal microclimate.
There are 7, 8 or 9-seater Caravelle minivans. All versions offer spacious seats for their passengers and ample luggage space. Thus, the trunk length behind the third row is 739 mm in the short version, and the total volume of the cabin behind the front row is 4,300 liters.
Powertrains
The 2019/2020 Volkswagen Caravelle Minivan is available with a 2-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 110, 150 or 204 hp. The base 110 hp engine is coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the more powerful engines are paired with an advanced 7-speed dual-clutch DSG. The car is distinguished by low fuel consumption thanks to its efficient powertrain and BlueMotion technology. The standard is a start-stop system, which turns off the engine when the car is stopped and reduces fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.
The minivan versions for Israel are front-wheel drive only, featuring a MacPherson strut suspension in the front and multi-link suspension at the rear. After 2019, the car features electric power steering. It interacts with active safety systems, which made it possible to significantly lengthen the list of options.
Equipment
The trim levels of the 2020/2021 Volkswagen Caravelle Minivan for Israel include two standard safety packages, which offer adaptive cruise control system, active FRONT ASSIST system for preventing head-on car accidents, rear cross traffic alert system and lane keeping assist. The car is equipped with 4-6 airbags, traction control systems and stabilization systems, hill descent control, brake assist system, tire pressure monitoring system. There is an electronic differential lock, which contributes to better traction and a higher level of safety.
The car features a new crosswind stabilization system that works at speeds over 80 km/h. Electronics compensates for the large wind profile of the minivan by selective wheel braking. The system is included in the basic equipment. The top-end version offers leather-trimmed seats, electric front seats and heating, LED headlights and an electric tailgate.
