Suzuki SX4. Alias S-Cross and the future Crossover
The Suzuki SX4 is a compact vehicle produced since 2006 in three generations and sold worldwide under various names: Suzuki S-Cross, Suzuki Crossover or Suzuki SX4 S-Cross. Interestingly, the first generation was developed in conjunction with the Italian company Fiat and was offered as a sedan or a 5-door hatchback. But the second generation (2013) turned into a stylish urban SUV. Today, the new Suzuki SX4, also known as S-Cross and the future Crossover, is still small in size, but at the same time it looks serious enough and rides like a ‘grown-up’ car, whose key qualities are expressiveness, confidence and efficiency.
The Israeli market offers the third generation Suzuki SX4, known as Suzuki S-Cross. In 2022, the SUV costs 141,815 shekels, including registration fees. That's how much the GLX version will cost with a hybrid system based on a 1.4-liter engine with 129 hp, a 6-speed automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive. All-wheel-drive versions are more expensive.
First generation
The first Suzuki SX4SX4 appeared at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. It is worth noting that the design of the novelty was developed by the ItalDesign studio. A small model (a sedan is 4,490 mm long and a hatchback is 4,150 mm long) came to replace the Aerio/Liana models. The car was initially intended for the European market, then it began to be sold in Japan, India, South America, Australia, South Africa and even North America, where it immediately appeared with all-wheel drive. It was equipped with different engines, including a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a 1.6-liter engine in two versions, and a 1.9-liter Fiat diesel engine, which produced just over 100 hp. The all-wheel-drive SX4 (for the USA) received a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 143 hp. In Canada, all-wheel drive was an option. A first-generation front-wheel-drive Suzuki SX4 was delivered to Israel. Back then, it was not an SUV, but a sedan or a 5-door hatchback.
Second generation
The second generation Suzuki SX4 again debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in November 2013, becoming a small urban SUV. Sales in Europe began in the spring of 2014, but already in October 2016, the vehicle was restyled, after which it was renamed Suzuki S-Cross in some countries. The second SX4 (already an SUV) was equipped with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engines with a capacity of 118 hp (this version with a CVT and front-wheel drive was offered in Israel), in addition there was a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. Although the length of the body increased (up to 4,300 mm), the model still belonged to the compact class, and the width (1,765 mm) and height (1,575 mm) were similar to the dimensions of the first generation. The vehicle looked more modern, thanks to huge headlights and calm contours.
Third generation
The new generation of the SX4 appeared in November 2021. It was offered only as the Suzuki S-Cross in Europe and Israel. The front and rear parts of the body are completely new, with diode optics. The wheel arches are covered with an expressive plastic lining. The image of the SUV has become more serious, even somewhat aggressive, but the dimensions have remained the same up to a millimeter, even the wheelbase is still 2,600 mm, but the weight has decreased by 60 kg. The interior of the vehicle has also been completely redesigned. The new multimedia system has received a 9-inch screen, as well as compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions. Additionally, the vehicle got versatile cameras, complementing options like a panoramic roof and adaptive cruise control.
The new Suzuki SX4 2022/2023 is offered with a single hybrid system, based on a 1.4-liter turbocharged Boosterjet series engine. The unit producing 129 hp and 235 Nm is complemented by a 48-volt starter-generator, which assists in starting, adding up to 14 hp and 50 Nm. It is powered by a small lithium-ion battery. There are two transmissions to choose from: manual and 6-speed automatic. And there are two types of traction: front or all-wheel Allgrip with several driving modes. But in the near future, advanced hybrids with a purely electric mode are expected.
