RAM Chassis Cab pickup. 1st generation, 2019 restyling
The RAM Chassis Cab is a working version of RAM cargo-passenger pickups, which has stronger towing and cargo transportation capabilities and provides for installing different equipment on the chassis. The 2019 restyled version provides increased interior comfort. It is available in double and single cab versions.
Exterior
The RAM Chassis Cab has finally replaced the iconic Crosshair inherited from Dodge with the RAM inscription, but has kept the same gigantic grille. The manufacturer claims that the three headlights offered for the working version provide twice the luminous flux than the truck model prior to the restyling.
A new aluminum hood ensures lower weight, and large openings in the front bumper help to feed the Cummins engine intercooler. According to the RAM developers, it is the largest intercooler ever installed on a pickup in this segment.
Interior and equipment
The 2019/2020 RAM Chassis Cab is offered in four standard trim levels: Tradesman (maximum functionality, normal comfort level), SLT (previous trim level + a number of additional options), Laramie and Limited (premium versions of pickups). The power unit allows towing up to 15,975 kg and transporting 5,674 kg.
The interior of the working pickup truck has been significantly improved, modernizing the design and using modern materials. Different trim levels comprise both 3.5 and 7-inch instrument cluster combinations, a 12-inch infotainment system with touchscreen, push-button start, and models with an 8-speed automatic transmission, as well as a rotary-type electronic gearshift device.
The cab has climate control, reduced noise levels, and larger ventilation openings for the windshield heater. The new center console offers more storage space, five USB ports, and optional wireless phone charging. The old type antenna was replaced with a device in the form of shark fins, which, in addition to performing its main function, also reduces wind noise when driving.
Engines and chassis
The vehicle is equipped with the most powerful engine developed by Chrysler, a 6.4 liter Hemi V8 engine generating 410 hp. The restyled RAM Chassis Cab is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission. But the former, 6-speed transmission is also available with a 370 hp engine. The engine also has a cylinder deactivation function to save fuel when driving at low speeds.
As for diesel engines, the vehicle is standardly equipped with a 6.7-liter inline 6-cylinder Cummins turbo diesel engine generating 360 hp, which is 35 hp more than the Chassis Cab prior to the restyling. The engine can only be coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The automaker claims that in addition to the increase in power and strength, the weight of the engine has been reduced by 27 kg, which is very, very significant, given the huge weight of the RAM.
Special options
Specifically for companies that upgrade the Chassis Cab to suit their needs, be it a bus or a construction truck, RAM has placed cables, hoses and other items below the top of the frame rails.
That is, there is nothing that could interfere with the installation of a platform, cargo box, or anything else at the rear of the frame. The frame also features a C-shape structure with a flat mounting surface and full-length drilled holes for additional lines and mounting hardware.
The electrical system includes special interfaces for those who carry out modernization, and the rear of the cab can be completely redesigned if required.
Safety
Each modification of the 2021 restyled RAM Chassis Cab comprises adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning function, automatic emergency braking, including braking the trailer, parking sensors, a 270 degree view camera system and a special cargo monitoring camera intended for control over the loading platform of the truck without leaving the cab.
