Toyota GR 86 Coupe. Third car in the Gazoo Racing family
The Toyota GR 86 is a sports coupe, produced from April 2021. Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division specializes in creating sports cars. It has already created the GR Supra and GR Yaris, and the new Toyota GR 86 will be the third car in the Gazoo Racing family, the successor to the GT 86 model and the Subaru BRZ twin. Sales of the new affordable sports car from Japan, the GR 86, started in Japan and the Old World in the autumn of 2021.
Exterior
The new generation of the elegant GT 86 coupe is now called GR 86, but it is still very similar to its predecessor. After all, the car remains the ‘twin’ to the Subaru BRZ, the new generation of which also appeared in the autumn of 2021. The cars have different nameplates and some body parts: front bumper, radiator grille and wheel rims. Compared to its predecessor, the new Toyota GR 86 has become 30 mm longer (4,265 mm) and 10 mm lower (1,310 mm), but the body width remains the same (1,775 mm). The wheelbase is 5 mm longer (2,575 mm). The body rigidity has grown by 50%, the roof and front fenders are made of aluminum. The curb weight of the model is only some 1,270 kg.
Toyota and Subaru models have different front bumpers. They can be distinguished by the shape of the air intake (the GR 86 has a trapezoid air intake, whereas the BRZ has a ‘smile’) and daytime running lights
Moreover, the Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ are targeted at different markets. Thus, Subaru has chosen the North American market, and Toyota will supply its cars to Europe and Japan. The cars will receive different settings to provide different types of handling.
Interior and equipment
The new Toyota GR 86 features a digital dashboard with a 7-inch display. There is a lateral overload sensor. The Japanese and European versions come with different media systems. Toyota models feature a smaller monitor equipped with physical buttons on the sides that is compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth functions. There is a rear view camera. The seats are sporty, and the second-row seats have a foldable backrest, which increases considerable space. Subaru models offer the proprietary security package with a stereo camera under the windshield and an automotive braking system (Eyesight).
Engines and chassis
The new coupe is based on an updated rear-wheel drive platform, which the first car is based on. But the 2021 Toyota GR 86 has gotten a bigger 2.4-liter engine with an output of 235 hp and 250 Nm instead of 200 hp and 205 Nm offer by its predecessor. The power is transferred to the rear wheels through 6-speed manual or automatic gearboxes. With the new engine, the acceleration time to 100 km/h has been reduced from 7.4 to 6.3 seconds. The car features a MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a double-wishbone suspension at the rear. The ventilated brakes are pedal-controlled. There are 215/40 R18 tires.
