Volkswagen Transporter Van and Minivan. 6th generation, 2019 restyling
The Transporter is a multifaceted and multifunctional Volkswagen model with a transverse engine and four-wheel drive layout, a two-liter turbocharged diesel and various types of transmissions. In 2019, the car was restyled, acquiring a new exterior (new grille, bumper, headlights). The interior has also been completely redesigned, with the main technical innovation being the electromechanical power steering instead of the hydraulic one.
Exterior
The following versions of the 2019/2020 Volkswagen Transporter are sold in Israel: an all-metal commercial van, an extended van, a pickup with a double cab, a passenger minivan and a long wheelbase minivan (3,000/3,400 mm), as of 2021. The minivan is 4,904 mm long, 1,904 mm wide and 1,990 mm high, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The minivan’s Long version is 5,304 mm and has a wheelbase of 3,400 mm. The commercial van is as long as a longer minivan (same length and wheelbase). The double cab pickup is the largest of all: 5,500 mm long, 1,994 mm wide and 1,960 mm high (wheelbase is the same 3,400 mm).
Interior
The restyled car has acquired a new instrument cluster with storage space; a new multifunction steering wheel and a dashboard (10.25-inch digital dashboard is available as an option); more functional doors with enlarged pockets. The interior equipment includes air conditioning, an on-board computer and a color display in the tidy, stain-resistant upholstery fabric, 12V and 230V sockets, as well as two USB C connectors for charging mobile devices. Wireless charging of gadgets is only available as a paid option. The 8-inch Discover Media navigation system supports voice control, smartphone integration and online navigation.
Depending on the version, the first row can comprise two or three seats (there is a lockable storage compartment under the double passenger seat). The rear doors can be hinged (optional for the Transporter with normal roof and standard with high). The backs of all seats, except the driver's one, can be folded (this is also a paid option). It is easy to access the third row (Easy Entry function). The standard trunk volume, depending on the layout of the seats and the length of the wheelbase, ranges from 298 to 1,967 liters. The seats can be removed from the passenger compartment and the car can be turned into a van. The maximum length of the trunk compartment is 2,572/2,938 mm.
Powertrains
The new Volkswagen Transporter is available with a 2-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 110 or 150 hp. The engines are paired with a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual clutch robotic gearbox DSG. Israeli versions are front-wheel drive only. Average fuel consumption varies from 6.8 to 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Utility versions are equipped with an independent MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear.
Equipment
The entry-level 2020/2021 Volkswagen Transporter (for example, the passenger version) comes with a wind stabilization system, which is important for vehicles with a high and rectangular body. The vehicle offers the following standard safety systems: electronic package for active safety and ESP (includes electronic differential lock), traction control (traction control system can be disabled), hill start assist. Standard equipment includes a set of 4 airbags, parking assistant, adaptive cruise control, distance monitoring system with autonomous emergency braking, driver fatigue warning, tire pressure monitoring system, and stability control systems. The safety package also includes the Mobilai 630 system, which includes traffic sign, pedestrian and two-wheeled vehicle detection, as well as lane departure warning system.
