Mercedes AMG C-Class Coupe. 4th generation, 2018 restyling
The Mercedes AMG C-Class is a powerful sports series of compact executive cars by Mercedes-Benz (Germany), which has been produced since 1994. The model is based on the C-Class Mercedes cars. At various times, the series was offered as a sedan, an estate and a 3-door hatchback. The third generation also started featuring a coupe body, and a cabriolet appeared in the fourth generation. In 2021, the market offers the fourth generation cars, released in 2013, which have already undergone restyling. The restyled Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic and Mercedes-AMG C 63 entered the market in the summer of 2018. The AMG family received the modernized technical equipment and several interior improvements. The AMG C-Class is currently available on the Israeli market in coupe and cabriolet bodies (as of 2021). Our review will tell you about the new Mercedes AMG C-Class Coupe.
Exterior
The exterior of the 2018/2019 Mercedes AMG C-Class has undergone some changes. But the artist’s hand touched the beloved sports version of the C-Class model carefully and tenderly. According to the company, this restyling is characterized by “a sharpened design and a stronger contrast to the AMG Line series.” In our opinion, the most noticeable innovation is the radiator grille, which has been redesigned. The bumpers and lighting equipment have been slightly changed: the head lighting is now LED, with a more efficient high-beam section, and the list of options now includes matrix headlights, each of which contains 84 diodes. The pattern of the taillights has changed. The restyled cars with the C 63 index (4-liter engine) differ from the more modest C 43 AMG by a new branded radiator grille with vertical bars, larger rear diffuser and exhaust pipes. The 2-door 4-seater coupe is 4,751 mm long, 1,877 mm wide and 1,401 mm high, with the wheelbase of 2,840 mm. The coupe is slightly shorter than the sedan, but wider and lower.
Interior
The interior has been improved more significantly, but most of the new equipment is offered for a surcharge. The AMG C-Class inherited a virtual configurable dashboard with a diagonal of 12.3 inches from the older models, which offers additional AMG configurations, where a large tachometer occupies the central position. A funny detail: the panel is still installed behind the round visors of the instruments, and the only scale located between the physical wells looks illogical.
It is required to note the new multifunction steering wheel with additional touch panels on the spokes to control the functions of the multimedia system. Instead of the standard 7-inch multimedia screen, you can order an enlarged 10.25-inch one. The separate ‘tablet’ is still in the same place. It can now be controlled by voice commands, a new touchpad with tactile feedback or the aforementioned touchpads on the steering wheel. In addition, the multimedia system has finally received the function of integrating with a smartphone. A fully virtual 12.3-inch dashboard with multiple instrument display options can also be ordered.
Powertrains
Here are the modifications of the Mercedes AMG C-Class coupe, presented in Israel in 2021.
- The engines have slightly changed: the ‘charged’ all-wheel drive Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic versions, equipped with a 3-liter V6 engine, have been boosted from 367 to 390 hp, while the torque remains the same (at the level of 520 Nm in the range from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm). But this has not affected the dynamics: the 2019/2020 Mercedes-AMG C 43 Coupe accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The settings for the optional Dynamic Body Control adaptive suspension have also been changed.
- The 2019/2020 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S has the same engine. The 4-liter turbocharged 8-cylinder engine still develops 510 hp and 700 Nm. But now a new gearbox will realize this tremendous power: the 9-speed automatic AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission with a wet clutch instead of a torque converter has replaced the previous 7-speed unit of the same series. The most powerful coupe accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, which is the fastest indicator in the C-Class family. The speed limiter has also been reconfigured: now the coupe has it at 290 km/h instead of 250 km/h. Just as before, the car is rear-wheel drive only, but the driving electronics programs have been slightly improved to enhance driving pleasure.
Equipment
The restyled cars have an improved camera and a long-range radar operating for a semi-autonomous control system. The navigator has been modernized, so now it informs the ‘autopilot’ about approaching intersections or sharp turns.
