The Nissan X-Trail is a compact crossover SUV, which has been produced by Nissan Motor (Japan) since 2000. The vehicle was one of the first Nissan SUVs to have an American twin, called the Rogue. In 2021, Israeli buyers could purchase the third generation SUV after the 2017 restyling.

The first generation

It was produced from 2000 to 2007. The first Nissan X-Trail was based on the Nissan FF-S platform, shared with the Almera and Primera vehicles. The SUV’s design was inspired by the style of the Nissan Patrol SUV. The X-Trail had two 2.0 and 2.5-liter petrol engines, which produced about 140 and 165 hp, respectively. There was a choice between a manual (5- and 6-speed) or automatic transmission. The car was known for its functionality (for example, the rear seats with the head rest covers retracted formed a flat floor) and quickly gained popularity in many countries.

The car had all-wheel drive versions with an All-Mode 4×4 transmission, with 2WD, 4WD or locked 4WD modes, which were selected using an electronic switch on the dashboard. In June 2003, Nissan modernized the interior and exterior of the car, as well as the 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine, which was boosted to 136 hp instead of the original 114 hp. In 2002, the manufacturer introduced a special version of the X-Trail GT, equipped with a 280 hp turbocharged petrol engine.

The first generation was standardly equipped with fully electric windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors, climate control, a single CD player, four airbags and a remote central locking system. The options included a sunroof, 16-inch alloy wheels, leather and electric seats, and more.

The second generation

It was produced from 2007 to 2015. The second X-Trail, built on the Nissan C platform, acquired the following engines: 2-liter petrol engine with 141 hp, 2.5-liter petrol engine with 165 hp and 2-liter diesel engine with 150 hp or 173 hp. Later there was the 20GT modification, equipped with a 2-liter Common Rail turbocharged diesel engine developed in conjunction with Renault (150 and 177 hp).

The following transmissions were offered: 6-speed automatic transmission, 6-speed manual transmission, Xtronic CVT and M-CVT with manual shifting. The 2010 restyling was insignificant and primarily aimed at improving the exterior and slightly refreshing the interior.

The third generation

It has been produced from 2013 to the present, and was restyled in 2017 (as of 2020). Based on the jointly developed Nissan/Renault Common Module Family (CMF) platform, the new X-Trail is sold in 190 countries. Nissan has chosen an urban crossover SUV and softer lines instead of the square-like SUV. The weight of the vehicle has been reduced. The tailgate now comprises more plastic, and aerodynamics have been improved thanks to good outside rearview mirrors and a rear spoiler.

The range of engines comprises petrol engines with the following volumes: 1.3-liter (160 hp), 1.6-liter (161 hp), 2.0-liter (144 hp), and 2.5-liter (171 hp). There are also 1.6-liter (130 hp), 1.7-liter (150 hp) and 2.0-liter (177 hp) diesel engines. The engines can be coupled with 6-speed manual transmission, Xtronic CVT or 7-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission.

2017 restyling

The restyled 2017 Nissan X-Trail features a modified shape of the front and rear bumpers, modernized headlights and taillights, LED daytime running lights (in some trim levels), and LED taillights as standard. The 2.5-liter 170 hp engine was borrowed from the previous model. Several new shades have been added to the SUV’s color palette, such as the bright orange (Orange Pearl). The trim levels with the Nissan Connect multimedia system are equipped with a 7-inch color touchscreen display.

The Nissan X-Trail hybrid version was unveiled in January 2017. The hybrid has regenerative braking, power consumption and lithium-ion battery condition monitor. It is equipped with a 2-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine producing 141 hp in combination with a 40 hp electric motor and the Xtronic CVT.

In 2020, the new Nissan X-Trail acquired new options: a new Nissan Connect multimedia system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces, a combination of coffee-colored Alcantara seats and remote engine start.
