Haval is a Chinese automotive brand founded in 2013. It belongs to Great Wall Motor, one of the largest automotive holdings in China. Haval division is engaged in the production of crossovers and SUVs.

Great Wall ranks first in China in the production of pickups and is one of the 500 largest enterprises in the PRC. Haval crossovers and SUVs are more comfortable and expensive ‘relatives’ of Great Wall vehicles. Between 2003 and 2013, Great Wall Motor sold about a million crossovers in different countries. In 2013, the Haval brand was officially registered, becoming an off-road division of Great Wall.

In 2018, the Haval H6 entered the TOP-10 list for the most popular crossovers and SUVs in the world, taking 7th place. The Haval models are sold in 40 countries around the world. The main sales markets, besides China, are the countries of Africa, South America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In the future, it is planned to enter the markets of the USA and European countries.

The name ‘Haval’ comes from the English phrase ‘I Have All’. According to the manufacturer, the slogan literally means the following: ‘I have all: a strong family, interesting job, loyal friends and a reliable car’.

History

Great Wall started producing crossovers and SUVs in 2002, and the first model was the Great Wall Safe, which was a licensed copy of the 1989 Toyota 4Runner. In 2005, the manufacturer presented the Great Wall Hover SUV, which was the first Chinese SUV to be certified by the European Union. This was the very first Haval model, called the Haval H3. Moreover, it was the first car to be exported to Europe and to win the CCTV National Brand Car of the Year award.

In 2011, the company released the Haval H6 SUV, which won the 2012 Chinese SUV award. The new mid-size crossover SUV, based on its own platform and created using the most modern technologies, had four-wheel or rear-wheel drive and not a frame, but a supporting body structure, was equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged diesel with 143 hp. The Haval H6 received a five-star safety rating in NCAP crash tests. Former Mercedes-Benz designer Andreas Deufel designed this vehicle. As a result, the SUV turned out to be stylish and expressive, and the monocoque body made it possible to increase the interior space and, with the help of independent suspensions, improve handling.

In 2012, Haval took part in the Dakar Rally, becoming the only Chinese team and winning 6th place. The Haval Dakar racing car is a modification of the flagship Haval H8.

The name ‘Haval’ comes from the English phrase ‘I Have All’. According to the manufacturer, the slogan literally means the following: ‘I have all: a strong family, interesting job, loyal friends and a reliable car’.

In 2013, Haval became an independent brand. It was then in Beijing that the company announced that the Hover brand, under which Great Wall Motors Corporation produced SUVs, would implement a new strategy. Under the slogan ‘Overcome a million. Venture the new journey’, the millionth SUV was released, and the brand decided to conquer Europe.

In 2014, the manufacturer presented the Haval H2, a fuel-efficient city SUV, which was equipped with a small 1.5-liter petrol engine with 105 hp or a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine developing 150 hp. Another model introduced that year was the Haval H6 Coupe. It featured an extended wheelbase, four-wheel drive and a monocoque body, was equipped with turbocharged engines: a 2-liter petrol engine with 197 hp or a 2-liter diesel engine that developed 163 hp.

In 2015, the model range was divided into two lines: Haval Red (classic models) and Haval Blue (sports models). And in the same year at the Shanghai Auto Show, Haval unveiled as many as 17 new models, 5 power units and a prototype chassis to accommodate a hybrid system. The brand keeps on moving forward and gaining new positions in the global car market, focusing its efforts on the manufacture of fuel-efficient SUVs for city driving.

The 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show saw the first model created in collaboration between Great Wall and the German tuning studio Brabus, engaged in developing design and powertrains. And at the Shanghai Motor Show, the upgraded Haval N9 SUV was released.
