Aito M5. Huawei’s “smart” SUV
When a smartphone maker decides to build a car, the result is a ‘smart’ electric SUV. This is the first model by Aito to receive Huawei’s HarmonyOS Smart Cockpit. The “mobile living space” includes a “smart” driving system, network connectivity and cloud technology. Prices in China start at 39,000 dollars.
The Aito (Adding Intelligence to Auto) project, created by Huawei, makes the cars intelligent. The IT giant provides the cars with information technology, is responsible for marketing and sales. Seres (part of Sokon Industry Group) provided the REEV DE-i platform (the SF5 SUV is built on it).
Exterior
The Aito M5 is a mid-size crossover, but with a length of 4,770 mm (4,785 mm for the electric version) it offers a decent wheelbase of 2,880 mm, which promises a roomy interior. The vehicle looks modern, featuring recessed door handles, adaptive LED headlights, panoramic roof, 19 or 20-inch wheels. The electric M5e is distinguished by aerodynamic elements and an additional front trunk with a volume of 80 liters. The rear trunk offers 369 liters.
Interior
The SUV comes with a 10.4-inch dashboard, 15.6-inch multimedia system, integrated into a single ‘ecosystem’ with other Huawei gadgets, and a projection display. There is a camera located on the windshield pillar that monitors the driver’s condition. The vehicle offers wireless charging for a smartphone, USB connectors, atmospheric lighting and a 1,000 W Huawei Sound system. The list of equipment comprises front seats with ventilation and massage, adaptive cruise control, and all-round cameras.
Powertrains
The hybrid system of the Aito M5 works as follows: electric motors are responsible for the rotation of the wheels, while a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine acts as a generator that charges the traction battery with a capacity of 40 kWh. The entry-level version produces a total of 428 hp, while the top-end Performance version offers 496 hp. A fully charged battery, together with a full tank of gasoline, promises a total driving range of 1,100 km. Average fuel consumption is 0.8 liters per 100 km. On pure electric traction, the SUV travels up to 150 km.
The electric Aito M5e is offered in two versions with the single traction battery with a capacity of 80 kWh.
- The rear-wheel drive version is equipped with one electric motor with 272 hp. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds, developing the maximum speed of 200 km/h. The driving range is 620 km;
- The all-wheel drive version comes with two electric motors with a total output of 496 hp. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, developing the maximum speed of 210 km/h. The driving range is 552 km.
