Mercedes-AMG GLE. 2nd generation, 2023 restyling
The restyling has touched the entire Mercedes GLE family. We have already reviewed the restyling of the classic GLE and its coupe version GLE Coupe. But now it’s time to see what has changed in the AMG versions after restyling: the sports AMG GLE 53 and the top-end AMG GLE 63 S. All models have changed inside and outside. Now they feature new technologies and fully electric powertrains, as all the GLE versions have turned into mild or plug-in hybrids. Most of the engines have become more powerful, and the second generation Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 offers a slightly increased torque. The updated models will appear in Europe in July. In Israel, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLE will go on sale no earlier than the first quarter of 2024.
Prices for the restyled 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLE have not yet been announced, but the previous generation, even before restyling, costs at least 904,631 shekels for the AMG GLE 53 modification (as of the end of 2022).
Exterior
The exterior of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLE has been slightly refreshed. Chrome-plated squares are now built into the horizontal bars on the radiator grille, while the air intakes have received a large ‘rib’ insert. The optics have retained their former shape, but acquired new light elements. Of special note is an animated projection of outdoor lighting with the Mercedes-Benz logo. Overall, the SUV looks more dynamic. Two twin tailpipes in high-gloss chrome provide additional racing highlights.
Interior
The entry-level version of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLE features high-quality materials, sporty design elements and many innovative systems. The AMG Performance steering wheel lets you really feel the dynamics: high-quality nappa leather ensures a secure grip, while the aluminum gearshift paddles create a real racing atmosphere. All main menu items are configured using multifunctional buttons. Touch buttons on the spokes allow you to control the central touchscreen and dashboard. The instrument cluster in typical AMG design not only looks great, but also sets new standards with its high-resolution multimedia display and intuitive user interface. The MBUX multimedia system has received the latest version of the Mercedes voice assistant. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless. However, the screen size remains the same (12.3 inches).
The AMG seats upholstered in fine nappa leather provide optimal lateral support and dynamic comfort. Interior exclusivity can be enhanced with unique color combinations such as macchiato beige/black. The black frames of the ventilation deflectors were replaced with real metal ones, as in the Mercedes-Maybach GLS. The Piano Black Flowing Lines trim, previously only available for the Maybach, is now available. In addition, the expanded list of equipment includes multi-contour seats, a head-up display, temperature-controlled cup holders and a logo projector when the front doors are opened.
The redesigned Off-Road Engineering Package includes underbody protection and increases ground clearance by 30 mm. In off-road mode, the center display shows roll and steering angles, as well as the view of the front wheels. The ‘transparent hood’ feature allows you to see the road in front of the car. There are new assistants that simplify maneuvering with a trailer.
Powertrains
The restyled Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 and 63 S have retained the same power. However, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 offers a slightly increased torque of 560 Nm (versus 520 Nm), while the power has remained the same 435 hp. The 3.0-liter turbocharged engine now uses a new generation 48-volt starter-alternator that is integrated into the gearbox. The electric motor produces 20-22 hp and 200-250 Nm, helping the internal combustion engine in the first seconds of acceleration. The engine now responds faster to commands, and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h has been reduced from 5.3 to 5.0 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h. The top-end 2023 Mercedes AMG GLE 63 S is still powered by a 4.0-liter V8 that produces 612 hp. It takes the SUV 3.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, the maximum speed is 280 km/h. All versions are equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. The air springs have been recalibrated and they also include adaptive dampers and active anti-roll bars in the AMG Performance models.
