Volvo S90 Sedan. 2nd generation, 2020 restyling
The Volvo S90 is the flagship E-segment sedan manufactured by Volvo (Sweden) since 1996. There are front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions, as well as a version with a hybrid system. In 2021, Israeli buyers can purchase the second generation sedan after the restyling of 2020.
The Swedes are known for their eco-friendliness, and Volvo Cars is no exception. The car manufacturer plans to produce exclusively electric cars by 2030, gradually removing all internal combustion engine vehicles, including hybrids, from the range. So the buyers have less than 10 years to rebuild their minds. The electric C40 Recharge is a bright sign of the coming electrification. We wonder if the company intends to ‘electrify’ the flagship Volvo S90, which was restyled in 2020, because, after all, the segment of executive sedans is conservative. What can the restyled car offer?
Exterior and interior
The new Volvo S90 is not apparently distinguishable from the pre-styling one. But when you take a closer look, you’ll notice a new radiator grille, a different lower part of the front bumper, and a new brand logo. The car features new LED taillights and exhaust pipes hidden under the bumper, which may be a hint of their uselessness in the future. Plus, the trunk lid silhouette and the spoiler design have changed.
There have been some minor interior changes. Now the seats are trimmed with expensive woolen fabric, instead of leather, which contradicts the ‘green’ trends. There is an option of smartphone wireless charging. The car can boast of the Bowers & Wilkins sound system with a new sound amplifier and improved active noise reduction function, as well as the Clean Air system with a multi-filter and a particle sensor, which makes it possible to check the air quality in the passenger compartment and to clean it. The Clean Air system is available as an option on all Volvo models, and this equipment again reminds us of the importance of nature conservation.
Technologies
The Drive-E turbocharged petrol engines are now available as mild hybrid versions. The petrol engine is assisted by a 48-volt electric starter-generator, which reduces fuel consumption by 15%. This is undoubtedly the first step towards electrifying the model range.
Equipment
In Israel, the 2021 Volvo S90 is available in Momentum, Inscription and Inscription Expression trim levels. The first has become better equipped and more comfortable due to high-pressure headlight washers, a 12V socket in the trunk compartment, rear electric head restraints and passenger airbag deactivation, as well as a function allowing for electric folding of the 2nd row of seats.
The premium Inscription version now contains the basic equipment that has become familiar: parking assistance camera, front and rear parking radars. The passenger seat is now electric and has the position memory function.
