2019 Subaru Outback Estate. 6th generation
The Subaru Outback is a five-seater estate produced by Subaru (Japan) since 1994. In 2019, the manufacturer released a new, sixth generation of the popular model. The new car is a full-fledged sixth generation, and not another restyling. The estate has been significantly upgraded both externally and technically. The new Outback, built on the SGP modular platform, features one new and one seriously redesigned engine, a more spacious interior and additional options. In general, the Japanese estate has remained faithful to its image, as the concept of the model has not undergone any fundamental unnecessary changes.
Exterior
The design is still solid and calm. First of all, the car features new head optics with characteristic ‘brackets’ of LED lights, borrowed from the previous car. The radiator grille has become slightly smaller and has lost the chrome decor, acquiring a wider bar with the star emblem; and the protective cover made of unpainted plastic, on the contrary, has become more massive. The usual round fog lamps have been replaced by more compact LED elements.
The body of the 2019/2020 Subaru Outback has become slightly larger. The new estate is 4,860 mm long, being 40 mm longer than its predecessor. It is 1,855 mm wide and 1,680 mm high. The wheelbase remains the same, 2,745 mm, and the minimum turning radius is 5.5 meters. The ground clearance has become more (220 mm).
Interior
The new Subaru Outback is built on the modular SGP platform, shared with the Impreza, XV, Forester and Evoltis of the latest generations. The body rigidity has increased by 70%, the rear subframe by 50%. The interior has become larger and more comfortable due to increased headroom, shoulder room and legroom. The large trunk compartment (512 liters) can be easily expanded to 1,801 liters with the rear seat backrests folded down. Interestingly, there is a sensor at the rear door, so if you want to open it, you just need to wave your hand in front of the Subaru emblem.

The interior has been significantly modernized, acquiring a Starlink multimedia system with a diagonal of 11.6 inches (a 7-inch screen as standard). Thanks to new door trims and sound-insulated glass of good quality, the car has become noticeably quieter. The front seats with 10 electric adjustments will provide the maximum level of comfort, while front and rear seats are heated. The top-end trim level includes ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel. 4 USB ports and two 12V sockets are available for connecting media devices and charging.
Powertrains
The engine range has changed. There are two engines to choose from: a 2.5-liter direct injection engine with 185 hp and a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with 264 hp. Both units are petrol, and there will no longer be a 3.6-liter engine. The current engines will work with the modernized proprietary Lineartronic CVT. Only the four-wheel drive with a rear axle clutch is available. There is an ATV (Active Torque Vectoring) electronic system that controls the torque vector using the brakes, as well as the X-Mode off-road mode, which activates traction control electronics.
The car has turned out to be quite fuel-efficient. Thus, the 2.5-liter version consumes from 7.1 to 9 liters of petrol per 100 km, and the turbocharged 2.4-liter version consumes from 7.8 to 10.2 liters. The volume of the fuel tank is 60 liters, which is enough for a decent driving range. The car comes with a MacPherson strut front independent suspension with aluminum lower L-arms and 23 mm hollow stabilizer bar and a double wishbone rear suspension with subframe and 19 mm anti-roll bar.
Equipment
The 2020/2021 Subaru Outback is equipped with a full complement of airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag. It also has a modern collision avoidance system EyeSight and a parking assistant, as well as a DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System. A standard reversing camera ensures safe reversing.
Simple versions have a seven-inch screen of the media system and an analogue climate control unit, but more expensive cars have a vertical 11.6-inch Starlink tablet. Only the pointer instruments are available. The list of options includes an electric drive and ventilation of the front seats, leather trim, heated steering wheel and seats, as well as a Harman/Kardon sound system.
