The BMW 2 Series is a passenger car that has been produced since 2014 in coupe and convertible bodies. In 2019, the range was expanded with the Gran Coupe sedan. In 2021, the manufacturer announced the second generation. This is a full-fledged change of generation, required thorough preparation from the manufacturer. The model switched to a new platform and acquired four power units, while all-wheel drive will be offered only for the most powerful one. Back in mid-May, the Bavarians published photos taken during the tests and revealed many technical characteristics. And finally, the model has debuted. We’d like to share with all the actual detail about the new BMW 2 Series Coupe.

The new car destined for the global market will be produced at the new plant of the Bavarian company in Mexico. The coupe will enter the German market in January 2022. It is still unknown when it appears in other countries. But the prices have already been announced:

  • BMW 220i — from 39,700 euros
  • BMW 220d — from 42,800 euros
  • BMW M240i xDrive — from 56,000 euros

Exterior

For the moment, the manufacturer has only unveiled the new BMW 2 Series Coupe, which is 4,537 mm long, 1,838 mm wide and 1,390 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,741 mm. Thus, the Series 2 is 105 mm longer and 64 mm wider, but 28 mm lower than its predecessor. The distance between the axes has grown by 51 mm. The front and rear tracks have grown by 54 and 31 mm, respectively (or by 63 and 35mm for the high-end M240i xDrive version). The coupe’s trunk still houses 390 liters of luggage, but the edge of the luggage compartment has decreased by 35 mm.

The BMW Group calls the BMW 2 Series Coupe the ideological successor to the legendary first BMW 02 that appeared 55 years ago. However, in terms of its technical equipment, the Coupe Series 2 is close to the Series 4 unveiled in 2020, which didn’t have a gigantic grille. Thus, the new model is more compact. The BMW 2 Series can be distinguished by the exclusive triangular air intakes on the bumpers and the standard LED headlights.

Interior

The operator’s interface with the seventh generation operating system comes standard. The entry-level models feature 5.1-inch dashboard display and 8.8-inch multimedia system touchscreen, BMW Live Cockpit Professional package with 12.3-inch instrument panel and optional 10.25-inch infotainment system screen. You can control the system via the touchscreen, iDrive controller, steering wheel buttons and by voice. For the first time the new BMW 2 Series is equipped with a heads-up display. There is also a sporty steering wheel (offered for the entry-level version).

Engines

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe will be initially offered in three modifications.

  • The entry-level 220i version is equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder petrol engine with 184 hp and 300 Nm, accelerating the coupe to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
  • The entry-level 220d version is equipped with a 2-liter diesel engine, producing 190 hp and 400 Nm, which is paired with a 48-volt starter-generator. Acceleration to 100 km/h occurs in 6.9 seconds. Both engines are accompanied by an 8-speed automatic transmission. The version is rear-wheel drive only.
  • The most advanced version is the M240i xDrive. It is equipped with a 3-liter inline engine producing 374 hp and 500 Nm, which allows the car to reach the first 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and launch control, brakes and an M Sport rear differential. For a surcharge, you can get an adaptive M-suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers.

For a surcharge, you can replace the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with a Steptronic Sport with an exclusive Sprint function that changes the engine and gearbox settings to improve overtaking dynamics and responsiveness during maneuvers. Safety systems and driving assistants, including active cruise control and all-round visibility of the 2022 BMW 2 Series were borrowed from the Series 3 and 4. BMW promises that a few months after the start of sales, the new 2 Series will receive a new 2-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine boosted to 245 hp.
