Volkswagen ID. 2all. Future ‘people’s’ electric car
On March 15, 2023, Volkswagen introduced the concept of the future mass-produced electric car. The idea is in the ID. 2all name itself, which means ‘ID. to all’. The Volkswagen ID. 2all is designed to show what the future ‘people’s’ electric car will be like, which is expected to appear no earlier than 2025. Perhaps the car will drop the “2all” prefix and get the name “ID. Golf”. In this case, we will say that the ancestor of the C-segment will be the first mass-produced electric hatchback. Be that as it may, this is only the first of ten electric novelties that the German brand promises to introduce by 2026. And by 2030, 80% of Volkswagen models sold in Europe will be electric.
An affordable electric Volkswagen will cost 25,000 euros. Serial production will begin in 2025. At first, the ID. Life SUV was designed to become the “people's” electric car, but Volkswagen managers did not like its design.
Exterior
The ID. 2all was designed by Volkswagen’s new Chief Designer Andreas Mindt. The concept car has beautiful proportions with recognizable rear pillars from the Volkswagen Golf, a smooth sill line, elegant headlights, bulging wheel arches and large 20-inch wheels. It is close in size to a C-segment hatchback: the length of the electric vehicle is 4,050 mm, the width is 1,812 mm, the height is 1,530 mm, and the wheelbase is 2,600 mm.
Interior and equipment
The passenger compartment looks minimalist, and does not even have touch buttons. The dashboard has an 11.9-inch screen, while the multimedia system screen has a 12.9-inch screen. Under the infotainment center, there is a climate control unit with four huge keys (which is just convenient). There is wireless charging for two smartphones and plenty of USB ports, as well as a 230V outlet. The trunk volume reaches 490 liters, including a 50-liter ‘underfloor space’, and with the rear seats folded down, it grows to 1,330 liters. The back of the front passenger seat can be folded forward, which allows you to get a flat platform 2.2 m long, which can be used to transport bulky goods.
Nothing is known about the equipment of the entry-level version of the future car. And the top-end ID. 2all versions are richly equipped: power and massage front seats, panoramic roof, matrix headlights and Travel Assist autopilot.
Powertrains
Volkswagen engineers have built the concept on a simple version of the MEB electric vehicle platform, so the Volkswagen ID. 2all has only one electric motor on the front axle and semi-independent rear suspension. But the motor is powerful, with an output of 226 hp, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds, and developing a top speed of 160 km/h. The battery capacity has not yet been announced, but in all likelihood should be decent, because the claimed range will be about 450 km within the WLTP cycle. The battery capacity can be charged from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes.
In 2023, the Israeli market offers a compact ID.4 SUV with one electric motor with a capacity of 204 hp. A battery charge with a capacity of 77 kWh should be enough for 519 km (according to the WLTP cycle). The cost starts from 235,437 shekels (as of the beginning of 2023).
