Mercedes E-Class Coupe. 5th generation, 2020 restyling
The Mercedes E-class is a series of business-class passenger cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz (Germany) since 1984. In 2020, the fifth generation was restyled. Currently, Israeli buyers can purchase the restyled E-Class coupes and sedans (as of 2021).
After the restyling, the new Mercedes E-Class coupe features slight exterior changes. The principal focus was given to the technical equipment and the expanded list of electronic assistance systems. The 2020/2021 2-door 4-seater coupe is 4,835 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,438 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,873 mm. The trunk volume is 405 liters. The manufacturer calls the new E-Class coupe ‘style icon’, ‘masterpiece of intelligence’ and ‘purebred Gran Turismo’. Perfect proportions, sharp forms, modern technologies… According to the manufacturer, no other coupe combines dynamism, comfort and safety to the same extent. Exterior
The restyled Mercedes E-Class coupe comes with a new radiator grille and other headlights, which, even in the entry-level version, are fully LED (just as before). The modified headlight units are practically no longer divided into two parts. Multibeam LED matrix lighting is available as an option. Due to several dozen LEDs in each headlight, electronics can change the parameters of the light beam, for example, creating a ‘shadow’ on oncoming cars so as not to dazzle drivers with high beams. Using data from the navigation system, the headlights can ‘prepare’ for turns by illuminating them or by functioning as fog lights. The plastic body kit has also been modified. At the rear, the restyled coupe can be recognized by a different pattern of LED lights (their shape remains the same). The bumper and the shape of the exhaust pipes are indistinguishable from the pre-styling modification. The equipment comprises the so-called ‘aerodynamic’ rims, which, due to a special design, help to improve fuel efficiency.
Interior and equipment
The comfort of the restyled coupe is ensured by the roomy interior, especially in combination with the panoramic roof, which is available as an option. A luxurious ambience is created by numerous exclusive color schemes and premium material combinations, while a striking contemporary style is harmoniously complemented by a sophisticated lighting concept.
The new 2020/2021 E-Class Coupe has four new exterior paint colors and an increased number of interior trim options. It is pleasant to see the new two-spoke steering wheel. The front panel features traditional, fused, virtual dashboard and media system displays. The entry-level version comes with 10.25-inch displays, whereas 12.3-inch displays are offered as an option. The new Mercedes E-Class is equipped the most advanced MBUX multimedia system with augmented reality elements and advanced voice control. The navigator has an augmented reality system that helps you quickly navigate the city traffic and is able to determine the numbers of buildings on the street, displaying prompts. The restyled version features an upgraded autopilot with expanded functionality and a surround camera system, which will now be able to keep an eye on a parked car.
There is now the Energizing Coach function, offering several relaxation programs (selected depending on the information received from the vehicle’s on-board systems). Electronics interact with gadgets to assess the driver’s stress levels and even sleep quality. Based on this data, the system itself selects the massage program, music and interior lighting color. Two more innovations are the Urban Guard Protection and Urban Guard Protection Plus systems. They allow the owner, using a mobile application, to find out about the break-in, stealing and evacuation attempts, as well as assess the severity of damage, for example, if the car is scored in a parking lot. The system will even display which side it happened from.
Modifications
In Israel, the new 2021/2022 Mercedes E-Class coupe is available in the E300 modification. It is rear-wheel drive and equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged petrol in-line 4-cylinder engine with 258 hp. It is complemented by the mild hybrid EQ Boost, a 48-volt starter-generator capable of delivering up to 20 hp momentarily. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. According to the manufacturer, the average fuel consumption is 8 liters per 100 kilometers. With such an engine, the coupe accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, while the maximum speed is 250 km/h.
