2016 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe. 3rd generation
The Porsche 718 Cayman is a mid-engine sports coupe manufactured by Porsche (Germany). It has been produced since 2004. It has existed for three generations, the last of which, released in 2016, has undergone a deep restyling and started featuring the ‘718’ prefix in its name in honor of the legendary Porsche 718 sports car from the 60s. What can be said about the third generation Cayman? Only that the new sports car demonstrates amazing cornering stability, is extremely responsive to the movement of the steering wheel and doesn’t know what “understeer” is.
Distinctive features
The 2016/2017 Porsche 718 Cayman two-door coupe is 4,379 mm long, 1,801 mm wide and 1,295 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,475 mm. All versions of the coupe are rear-wheel drive and have a characteristic rear mid-engine arrangement of the engine, which shifts the center of gravity closer to the center. The vehicle features a McPherson strut independent suspension adapted by Porsche, variable-ratio steering with electric power assisted steering, 4-piston aluminum monobloc calipers at the rear, ventilated, perforated brake discs with a diameter of 330 mm at the front, 299 mm at the rear, and calipers with black finishing.
The sports car is equipped with Porsche Stability Management (PSM), including ABS with extended braking functions. The basic versions have 18-inch wheels, the Cayman T and GTS have 20-inch glossy wheels in titanium gray or black with a silky sheen. For a surcharge, the standard coupe can be equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which lowers the body by 10 mm, and the even sportier PASM suspension that lowers the body by 20 mm for the S.
Exterior and interior
Compared to the previous generation, the new Porsche 718 Cayman demonstrates many changes, but overall the exterior of the coupe is easily recognizable. Such main elements as lighting technologies, bumpers, door handles, side air intakes, and rims look different. The horizontal lines of the air intakes, as conceived by the developers, make the front face visually wider. The interior of the 2020/2021 Porsche 718 Cayman has also been upgraded, featuring the modified steering wheel, air deflectors and center console.
Equipment and safety
The entry-level coupe features 18-inch wheels, multifunction mirrors, a leather-braided sports steering wheel, a 4.6-inch dashboard display, a 7-inch multimedia system and a 6-speaker sound system. The standard sports seats have pronounced lateral support, leather and Alcantara upholstery. For a surcharge, you can install improved sports seats. There are many other features: dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated seats, sports instruments, BOSE surround sound system with 10 speakers and 505 W amplifier, navigation system, etc.
In addition to various exclusive elements, the Cayman S features 19-inch wheels while 20-inch wheels are offered for the GTS. Plus, all versions offer numerous options for personalizing the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
The 2021/2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is equipped with full-size airbags for the driver and front passenger, which, depending on the severity and type of collision, are deployed in two stages. The coupe is equipped with the Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP), which includes side impact protection system and two airbags on each side. The side bolsters of the seats are fitted with chest guards and the door panels are fitted with head airbags that open upwards. In addition to standard active systems (Electronic Stability Control, etc.), there are also numerous optional driver assistance systems: adaptive cruise control (in combination with PDK, it has a coasting function), a lane change assistance system and blind spot monitoring system, dynamic high beam control system, as well as a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors.
