2021 Subaru BRZ Coupe. 2nd generation
The Subaru BRZ is a lightweight, compact and relatively inexpensive rear-wheel drive coupe that revives the motorsport tradition that existed in Japan at the end of the last century. The car was designed by the engineers from Toyota and Subaru. Together, they have created a truly outstanding car, for example, its center of gravity is one of the lowest in the world. Today, we can already admire the second generation, released at the beginning of 2021. The car is expected to be available at the end of 2021.
Exterior
You might think that this is not a new generation, but the previous car after the restyling: even the steering wheel has remained the same. The style of the 2021 Subaru BRZ remains fully recognizable, although the car has received a different radiator grille and new LED optics, and the rear number plate has moved from the trunk lid (it is now higher) to the bumper. The swift, crouching profile of the BRZ is still recognizable. The rear lights have acquired a narrow bulkhead, retaining a separate unit with reversing lights and a fog lamp.
The coupe has become 30 mm longer (4,264 mm), although the wheelbase has increased by only 5 mm and is now 2,575 mm. The car has retained the same width (1,775 mm), and has become 10 mm lower (1,311 mm). The coupe has become 7 kg heavier, although this is not that much: after all, the engine has been replaced by a larger unit. It is pleasant to see that such an affordable car features the expensive aluminum hood, fenders and roof. Body rigidity has been increased by 60%.
Interior
The coupe’s interior has not undergone any significant changes. Yes, a 7-inch digital dashboard has been added to keep pace with progress. Moreover, a modern multimedia system with an 8-inch touchscreen, support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has appeared in the center of the front panel. The responsive multifunction steering wheel with red stitching has been borrowed from the predecessor model.
Powertrains
The 2021/2022 Subaru BRZ two-liter engine has been replaced by a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated combined injection engine, which produces 228 hp/7,000 rpm and 249 Nm/3,700 rpm. Compared to the previous engine, power and torque have increased by 11 and 15%, respectively. As before, there are two 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes to choose from. The limited slip differential is included in the list of basic equipment.
The chassis has also remained unchanged, with McPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear. However, the engineers managed to make the new generation more rigid and stable. The car features disc brakes, all of which are ventilated.
Equipment
The new Subaru BRZ features EyeSight active safety technology as standard (for all coupes equipped with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission). The VSC has the ability to completely turn off and can work in five different modes.
