2019 Nissan Juke SUV. 2nd generation

The Nissan Juke is a compact five-seater SUV by Nissan Motor (Japan) that was based on the Qazana concept, presented in 2009. The vehicle has been produced since 2010. In 2021, Israeli buyers had a chance to find the second generation of this typical city car.

The second generation SUV is created on the CMF-B modular platform, the structure of which is similar to the previous platform (McPherson strut at the front, semi-independent suspension at the rear) and makes the new model akin to the Renault Kaptur SUV. The length of the new Nissan Juke has grown from 4,135 to 4,210 mm, the width - from 1,765 to 1,800 mm, and the height - from 1,565 to 1,595 mm. At the same time, due to the use of high-strength steels in the design, the vehicle has become 23 kg lighter.

Exterior

With the change of generation, the small car has grown and become fancier, but the overall style and proportions are the same. Evolution is not a revolution in any way, but there is no other way to deal with such an interesting model. The embossed contours of the wheel arches, hidden rear door handles and round headlights with ‘eyebrows’ of running lights. The Nissan Juke’s extraordinary design has allowed it to find almost a million buyers in Europe.

Interior

The 2019/2020 Nissan Juke is finished with better materials and has comfortable seats, whereas the front ones are equipped with integrated headrests. Personalization options have been expanded, with a choice of several color combinations of finishes, as well as optional leather and suede seat upholstery. At the same time, the interior of the new SUV has lost a fair share of its former enthusiasm: the central tunnel is no longer stylized as a motorcycle gas tank, and instead of separate ‘wells’ in front of the driver, there is a digital instrument cluster unified with other models.

The developers tried to correct the main drawback of the first generation Juke and made the interior much more spacious, especially at the rear: the distance between the rows has increased by 58 mm, and the headroom has been increased by 11 mm. The trunk has also become more spacious: 422 liters versus 354 liters for the first generation model.

Powertrains and chassis

The former 1.2 turbo four-cylinder engine was replaced with a 1.0 DIG-T turbo 3-cylinder engine, shared with Renault. The new engine develops 117 hp and is aggregated with a 6-speed manual transmission (it is not available in Israel) or a 7-speed dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission. Only a front-wheel drive version is available. The engine consumes around 6.1 liters per 100 km.

With this engine, the declared dynamics is rather moderate: acceleration to 100 km/h occurs 11.1 seconds. The maximum speed is 180 km/h. The new Juke has various driving modes, including Eco mode, which makes the gas too ‘viscous’, and Sport mode, in which the steering wheel becomes too heavy. As usual, the Normal mode is optimal, as the car does not become sporty in any way, even in the Sport mode.

Trim levels and equipment

In Israel, dealers offer three variants of the 2020/2021 Nissan Juke: Acenta-Tech and Acenta-Tech with two-tone paintwork, as well as the more expensive N-Design. All of them are equipped with LED optics, rear spoilers and tinted rear windows.

  • The Acenta-Tech trim level includes: a multimedia system with an 8-inch color touch screen and 6 speakers, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electric parking brake, a rear-view camera, a multi-wheel with audio control buttons, cruise control, Bluetooth headset; climate control, rain sensors and parking (rear) sensors. Safety is ensured by the dynamic stability control (DCS), ESP, wheel lock prevention system with the brake assist system and the brake force distribution system, as well as the traction control system. The list of options also includes the tire pressure monitoring system and 6 airbags. The vehicle is distinguished by 17-inch wheel rims.
  • The N-Design features 19-inch wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and the same options as previous versions. But there are more safety systems. The ProPilot system provides adaptive cruise control with automatic braking system and lane assist, including automatic traffic sign recognition and low/high beam switching.
In your opinion, are compact SUVs full-fledged cars or developers’ joke?
