The Lincoln Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV, available in standard and long wheelbases. The fourth generation was released in 2017.

Being a perfect luxury SUV, the 2017 Lincoln Navigator has only one direct competitor, the Cadillac Escalade, but it is also inferior to the Navigator in some characteristics. In terms of technical capabilities, the Mercedes GLS and Range Rover are not inferior to the Navigator, but not in terms of useful space, big size and brutal power.

Parameters

In both long and short wheelbase versions, the new Lincoln Navigator has three rows of seats. The vehicle is seven-seater, but can be turned to an eight-seater version with a three-seat second row. The vehicle offers the roomiest interior, even the magnificent Escalade seems to be a small cozy shed in comparison with this palace on wheels.

Behind the third row, the standard Navigator has 0.5 cubic meters of space, and with the third and second rows folded down, the volume increases to 3 cubic meters. The long Navigator with the third row raised has more than 1 cubic meter of cargo space, and with the second and third row folded down, the volume increases to 3.6 cubic meters.

Engine and chassis

The 2017/2018 Lincoln Navigator is standardly equipped with a 3.5-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine with 380 hp and a torque of 623 Nm, accompanied by a 6-speed gearbox.

Basically, the Navigator is rear-wheel drive as standard, but who wants to have this giant carried only by the rear wheels? Therefore, the SUV can (and should) be all-wheel drive. But even with rear-wheel drive, it is capable of towing up to 4 tons of cargo, which is the maximum in the segment.

The engine and chassis system make this heavy vehicle easy to drive, providing for acceleration to 100 km/h in about 7 seconds. The independent rear suspension and additional adaptive suspension dampers provide ensure agile maneuvering. But despite the fact that the Navigator surpasses most of its competitors in maneuverability, it does not get any smaller. Thus, it can in no way be attributed to city cars. It feels best for long journeys on a flat highway.

Design and interior

In terms of design, the 2019/2020 Lincoln Navigator is a predictable and not very original large SUV, featuring a large body, a huge hood and giant wheels. Just like all American vehicles of this type, this vehicle is distinguished by a very large radiator grille with a proprietary label.

The Navigator’s interior looks truly luxurious, featuring some minor elements borrowed from not very premium (albeit very popular and quality) Ford Expedition base model. The center console with the proprietary Sync 3 system in the front and center offers intuitive control of the following options: navigation, audio system, telephone, climate control, etc.

The Navigator, both standard and long, is available in two trim levels: Select and Reserve. The Select version comprises:

  • 20-inch wheels;
  • automatic bi-xenon headlights;
  • reinforced towing package;
  • front and rear parking sensors;
  • automatic wipers;
  • rear protective glass;
  • electric tailgate;
  • electric folding footrests;
  • keyless ignition and entry;
  • dual-zone automatic climate control (with rear auxiliary controls);
  • tilt-adjustable steering wheel;
  • front electric seats;
  • electric pedals;
  • auto-dimming rear-view mirror;
  • Sync 3 interface with an 8-inch touchscreen;
  • voice control;
  • navigation system, and hundreds of different options, functions and other features.

The Reserve version additionally comprises 22-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, and enhanced body and interior trim options.

Moreover, each version can come with a sunroof, heated second-row seats, various modifications of 22-inch wheels in combination with adaptive suspension, an entertainment system for rear passengers with two independent 7-inch screens mounted on the head restraints. Regarding the standard and additional functionality, it is safe to say that the Navigator has it all, as it is quite difficult to come up with something it doesn’t have.

Safety

The standard safety equipment of the 2020/2021 Lincoln Navigator includes:

  • anti-lock disc brakes;
  • stabilization and traction control system;
  • trailer swing control;
  • front seat side airbags;
  • three-row side airbags;
  • collision warning system;
  • front and rear parking sensors;
  • rear view camera;
  • blind spot monitoring system;
  • rear cross traffic alert;
  • programmable MyKey system that allows limiting the driver’s functionality (for example, if parents allow their adult child to drive this monster).

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the highest 5-star rating to the fourth generation Navigator. The highest mark was also received from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
