The Mercedes EQS will have its online world premiere on April 15th. Meet the new electric car
It is called the electric counterpart to the new flagship Mercedes S-Class, but this is not entirely true, or rather this is not true at all. This car is different. It is like an alien from the future that has used a time machine to arrive at our world. The Mercedes EQS is a luxurious electric car, almost a spaceship, the first electric Mercedes car, which has no analogues among cars with internal combustion engines.
We look forward to the online world premiere of the new Mercedes EQS on Thursday 15 April at 19.00. In the meantime, we want to share some interesting facts. Let’s go back to the future? Come on! The first photos we saw evoked associations with James Bond’s cars. The agent 007 will definitely not feel ashamed to drive this car through the streets of Monaco. A spectacular silhouette, streamlined form, perfect aerodynamics: with 19-inch AMG wheels and the Sport mode, the air drag coefficient is only 0.20 (!). And the manufacturer claims that this is a world record for production models. Despite the fact that the petrol and electric flagships have a lot in common, they are completely different models both visually and technically.
The electric car cannot be confused with an S-Class model: the EQS is equipped with a black panel radiator grille (part of the corporate style) and original lighting technology. What else? Coupe-like liftback profile, frameless doors, impressive wheelbase, spacious interior.
And inside… This is a real electronic kingdom of new super-advanced technologies! The developers report that the EQS comprises forty inventions or innovations. Up to 350 gauges and sensors (depending on the modification) will control all the systems and everything that happens in the passenger compartment and outside.
But a full-width dashboard curved screen with a width of 141 cm is the most impressive element here! It combines a 12.3-inch dashboard, a 17.7-inch center screen and a 12.3-inch passenger display (the latter two are OLED), as well as climate control and side deflectors. A special coating on the display makes it easy to clean, and the aluminum silicate glass is scratch-resistant. The huge display can be complemented by a head-up screen with a 1.3 million dots micromirror chip ensuring the same graphics quality as a 77-inch monitor.
However the fantastic Hyperscreen is an option, while the entry-level trim offers a slightly different center console. And yes, all screens have tactile feedback, which is perhaps one of those few things that unite the EQS with the new S-Class. 12 actuators are responsible for the tactile feedback of the screen. The latest MBUX interface is controlled by an eight-core CPU featuring 24GB of RAM. The operation of the MBUX menu levels depends on the pressure intensity. Smart MBUX is able to understand the context and show the user the necessary functions in time. The gesture control is also available for the rear-row passengers. And yes, it is capable of self-learning.
How will this electric car sound? It will generate a special sound, which not only replaces the rumbling of an ICE, but also creates an indescribable atmosphere. The background sound is formed on the basis of a dozen parameters. The entry-level trim contains two sets of synthesized sounds: Silver Waves and Vivid Flux. You can enjoy the clear sounds of the forest, sea and summer rain. If you want something else, there is an alternative, as all major music streaming services are integrated into the multimedia system. Moreover, the car is equipped with a 710-watt Burmester audio system with 15 speakers.
It will also smell great… Or at least we hope so! After all, a new fragrance No.6 MOOD Linen has been developed for the Mercedes EQS. The number ‘6’ in the name refers to 1906, when Mercedes Electrique was established by Emil Jellinek, the father of the same Mercedes, after which the car was named.
And yes, you will never forget that you are inside a Mercedes: there are tiny three-ray stars everywhere: on the black front panel of the body, as a background on displays, in the form of laser perforation on interior decoration elements with interior lighting.
Let’s move on to the heart. We expect to find inside a pair of electric motors (one at the front and one at the back) with a total capacity of 476 hp and 760 Nm, similarly with the 2019 concept. In 2022, the AMG version is expected to be released, which will have a total of 600 hp and 900 Nm.
A 108 kWh battery will provide a drive range of more than 700 km (according to the WLTP cycle). The manufacturer promises that the car will accelerate to 100 km in 4 seconds, and the top speed will be limited to 210 km/h. The EQS will be able to charge at a power of 200 kW, thus restoring 300 km of autonomy in just 15 minutes. The battery pack supports 400V charging, and a forced cooling or heating system is used to keep the battery temperature stable during fast charging if the outside temperature is negative. The car complies with the ISO 15118 standard regulating charging requirements, which means it is compatible with 90% of public charging stations in the United States.
The electric liftback will be available in both RWD and AWD versions. It will be produced in the same place as the S-Class, at the Factory 56 in Sindelfingen. The European market expects the EQS to be released in August 2021. And in September, we will see the second more compact Mercedes EQE electric car.
We are eagerly waiting for the 15th of April! We will immediately share with you all the interesting details and, of course, photos!
