Mercedes G-Class AMG. Luxury and power rolled into one
The Mercedes G-Class AMG is a powerful high-performance series based on the full-size all-wheel drive SUVs produced by Mercedes-Benz (Germany) since 1994. In 2020, Israeli buyers could purchase the second generation of this luxury 2018 SUV.
The history of the G-Class began in 1972. It all started with a military version, and in 1979, the first civil version was released. The 460 series-produced cars were equipped with the inline four-, five- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines producing up to 156 hp. In 1990, the manufacturers presented a 463 series car with front and rear solid axles, permanent all-wheel drive, electric lock actuators and ABS. In 2018, the third generation of the legendary Mercedes G-Class SUV came out with an all-new W464 body. Development of the AMG version was carried out in parallel with this, and its production started in 1994.
The first generation
It was produced from 1994 to 2017, while its restyling took place three times: in 2008, 2012 and 2015. The first model, the G 36 AMG, was equipped with a 3.6-liter inline six cylinder engine with 272 hp. In 1998, the manufacturers presented the G 55 AMG, which perhaps was the fastest, most reliable and best-equipped G-Class car at the time. It was powered by a 354 hp V8 engine that was previously used in other AMG models, allowing the car to accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds with a maximum speed of up to 209 km/h. It’s hard to imagine, but the G 55 AMG kept all the solutions, including all-wheel drive, that characterized the W463 series. In 2004, the manufacturers presented the G 55 AMG, equipped with a 476 horsepower compressor engine. The vehicle could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
After the improvements were made in 2006, the G 55 AMG acquired an expanded list of equipment, new trim options and an increase in power output to 507 hp. In 2012, the model could boast of LED running lights, new mirror housings and other rear optics. The interior looked completely different, featuring a tablet on top of the front panel. At the same time, a new high-performance version of the G 63 AMG with more than 500 hp was released. It could accelerate to 100 km in 5.4 seconds. Moreover, the manufacturers introduced a top-end version of the G 65 AMG with a 6-liter V12 twin-turbo engine, which produced more than 600 hp. In 2013, the Germans launched the three-axle G 63 AMG 6×6. The car was built on the chassis of an army all-terrain vehicle Mercedes G 320 CDI. It was 5,875 mm long, and its ground clearance was increased from 210 mm to 460 mm. The car was equipped with a 5.5-liter V8 engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. This version could overcome a ford up to one meter deep, had an angle of approach of 52° and an angle of departure of 54°. Thus, the G-Class occupied a small, but trendy segment of luxury sports cars.
The second generation
It has been produced from 2018 to the present (as of 2020). The second Mercedes AMG G-Class is an all-wheel drive SUV with an asymmetric center differential that distributes torque in a 60/40 ratio in favor of the rear axle. It is equipped with the front double wishbone suspension and the rear spring suspension with ventilated disc brakes ‘around a circle’. The platform for the new 2020 G-Class was developed by AMG, which decided to remove the subframe from the front suspension and, in general, to increase the rigidity of the frame-body-chassis system.
The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 looks truly powerful: a distinctive radiator grille, optional 22-inch wheels with a diameter of 55.9 cm and an expressive AMG Performance exhaust system with two chrome lateral twin junction pipes make this iconic car even more eye-catching. The raw power of the twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 engine with 585 hp makes it possible to reach 100 km in 4.5 seconds. The impossible becomes possible!
Numerous design elements create the AMG’s unique style: distinctive front apron and radiator grille, a decorative insert in the outer molding, high-quality light-alloy wheels, as well as wheel arch extensions and red AMG brake calipers. The expressive side tailpipes are the cherry on the cake.
Inside, you will find space and all the conditions to enjoy driving! The 2020 Mercedes AMG G 63 will not leave anyone indifferent! It can boast of the noble diamond-patterned leather upholstery, such modern materials as carbon fiber or DINAMICA microfibre, an optional AMG Performance carbon steering wheel, and aluminum paddle shifters.
