Mercedes-AMG S-Class Sedan. 3rd generation 2017 restyling
Mercedes-AMG S-class is a powerful sports car version of the executive passenger car from the German company Mercedes-Benz that has been in production since 1999 and that is available in sedan, coupe, and convertible car body versions with either a rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. In 2020 the Israel market offered 2017 restyled versions of the third generation vehicles. Fourth generation vehicles were planned to be released in 2021.
The 4-door and 4- or 5-seat sedan of the 2017 model year has the following measurements: 5287 mm in length, 1915 mm in width, 1499 mm in height, and 3165 mm in the wheelbase area. The trunk volume is 510 liters.
Distinctive features
Mercedes-AMG 2017/2018 is a sports car with a highly dynamic sedan body. This model is of an executive car range, combining into one both advanced technical features of a sports car and a luxurious appearance of a high-end vehicle. In comparison with the ‘regular’ vehicles, the sports car model has a more lightweight body, bigger air inlets, and a bigger radiator grille as well as a front spoiler reducing the rising force. By just looking at the car from the front and seeing its large Jet Wing air inlets and a radiator grille with an AMG logo attached to it typical for all AMG models, you start to notice your heart rate increase and your eyes sparkle with joy. From the very side of the car body and up until its rear part there are beautiful dynamic lines running through it. Unbelievably high acceleration capacities are complemented by the powerful roar of the AMG Performance exhaust system with its adjustable flaps and conjoined exhaust nozzles. Excellent braking ability is ensured by the big perforated brake discs ventilated from the inside. Made from composite materials, these discs have excellent wear qualities even in extreme environments as well as reduced unsprung weight. There is also an option available for the discs to have red brake calipers. As for the ‘heart’ of the sedan, there are several powerful yet fuel-efficient engine options available with a power capacity of up to 630 hp.
The passenger compartment of the car is equipped with lots of futuristic details including various controls and indicators and is made of high quality materials. Wrapped in Nappa leather, the AMG Performance flat bottom steering wheel is equipped with 3 spokes and a perforated grip as well as silver-plated chrome cover trims and an integrated AMG logo. Thanks to the paddle shifters, the driver can now change gear by hand, thus getting a more ‘sports car-like’ experience. The interior of the car is filled with the motorsport atmosphere, too: Touch Control touch-ups allow for more intuitive driving and better control of most of the car functions. Unique AMG seats with their classic trim provide excellent lateral support. High quality analog IWC clock is placed in the very center of the dashboard between the two air vents. Adding to the sports atmosphere of the car are polished stainless steel AMG pedals with rubber inserts.
Modifications
In 2017-2020 the market offered two Mercedes-AMG S-class modifications – AMG S65 and AMG S63 4Matic+. The rear-wheel drive model was supplied with a 6-liter V12 gasoline turbine motor with a power capacity of 630 hp. As for the four-wheel drive model, it was equipped with a 4-liter V8 gasoline turbocharged motor of 612 hp. The maximum speed of both versions was limited by 250 km/h but the ‘0 to 100 km/h’ was different – with 3.5 seconds for the S63 4Matic+ model and 4.3 seconds for the S65 one. Both models are equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

Adding to the exquisite design of the car is the top dash trimmed with artificial ARTICO leather. Another distinctive feature of the new AMG model is the high quality analog IWC clock placed in the very center of the dashboard between the two air vents. To highlight the sports character of the vehicle the passenger compartment is also equipped with polished stainless steel pedals with rubber inserts as well as a comfortable AMG Performance flat bottom steering wheel with 3 spokes and a perforated grip, silver-plated chrome cover trims, and an integrated AMG logo. Paddle shifters allow changing gear by hand, thus providing the driver with a more ‘sports car-like’ experience.
The interior of the car is filled with the motorsport atmosphere, too, with the Touch Control touch-ups allowing for more intuitive driving and better control of most of the car functions. The passenger compartment is also equipped with a widescreen AMG cockpit display with its unique indications. This display masterfully combines into one the typical 32.2cm (12.3inch) AMG instrument cluster and the 31.2cm (12.3inch) AMG multimedia display, offering HD resolution for the indicators. There are three indicator designs available for the AMG instrument clusters including ‘standard’, ‘sports’, and ‘advanced’ design settings. With the possibility to see additional information about the motor and gear oil temperature as well as charging pressure and indicators of such devices as accelerometer, RACETIMER etc., the car improves its technical possibilities even further. The scale of the speedometer is limited by 330 km/h which is another proof of the great power that lies within the vehicle.
The rear seat area of the First Class trim version model consists of two separate seats, one solid executive class console, and cup holders with temperature control, and is extremely spacious. 12 electric seat motors allow the seats to be adjusted to passengers of all heights. Smartphones and multimedia access are very convenient to use, too. Another unique feature of this model is the executive class front passenger seat equipped with a footrest and a possibility to set the backrest inclination to up to 43,5° for maximum comfort. An extremely advanced custom entertainment system for the back seats (optional) includes two displays, one remote control, one Blue-Ray drive, USB- and AUX-ports as well as two sets of wireless earphones (optional).
