Porsche 718 Spyder. Aggressive, energetic, bold

The Porsche 718 Spyder is a two-seater premium sports roadster produced by Porsche (Germany), a member of the VAG Group. It has been produced since 2019. Israeli buyers have a chance to purchase the first generation of the car (as of 2021).

The 718 Spyder originated from the 2016 merger of the Boxster and Cayman models. The first Spyder was initially equipped with a turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine. But this layout was not classic for the manufacturer and did not suit a certain segment of customers.

The new Porsche 718 Spyder will take your breath away with its emotion and power, with a dynamic mid-engined concept, with a lightweight soft top that will probably never close, with a sports suspension, a manual gearbox, door hinges, that is, with everything that you don’t need in your everyday life, but that really touches your heart.

The first generation

It has been produced from 2019 to the present (as of 2021). In 2019, the manufacturer introduced a completely new Porsche 718 Spyder equipped with a classic naturally aspirated high-speed engine. It features a sky slider that can be folded by hand. The 718 Slider has a lowered windshield frame, and there is no full-fledged wing on the rear. But there is a small active spoiler that operates at speeds over 120 km/h. The exhaust system is more compact, which has made it possible to install a full-fledged diffuser. The layout of the 2019/2020 Porsche 718 Slider has a longitudinally-mounted rear engine. That is why the suspension has a slightly unusual structure. The MacPherson strut independent suspension is installed around the circle.

The car is equipped with a classic 4-liter 6-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol boxer engine. It has two camshafts per head, an advanced variable valve timing system and piezoelectric injectors. Their distinguishing feature is the response speed. They are capable of injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber up to five times per cycle. As a result, the engineers have managed to squeeze out 420 hp at 7,600 rpm and 420 Nm of torque in a small range from 5,000 to 6,800 crankshaft revolutions per minute. The gearbox is exclusively a 6-speed manual transmission. No automatic transmission is available even for a surcharge. The car can be rear wheel drive only. The differential is self-locking. As a result, the car is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km in just 4.4 seconds and reach a maximum of 301 kilometers per hour. This is the only version in the family that can develop more than 300 km/h.

GT4 version

The GT4 version is designed for auto racing. It can be equipped with the Clubsport package, which includes safety equipment for auto racing: 6-point sports harnesses, a fire extinguisher and a safety rail in case the car rolls over.

The GT4 has rigid ball joints instead of the classic rubber bushings, making the steering more precise. Moreover, by default, the car is equipped with PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) adaptive struts. They reduce the ground clearance by 30 mm and have shock absorbers of variable stiffness. By default, the brakes have a fixed caliper, and carbon-ceramic composite discs can be ordered for an additional fee.

Which car could you drive to outpace a Porsche 718 Spyder on a straight track?
