Update:

In November 2021, the manufacturer announced the hybrid Elantra versions for Israel.

The successful seventh generation Hyundai Elantra sedan officially premiered on March 18, 2020 in California. The new car has changed dramatically. A new platform has made it larger. The sedan has acquired the youthful image of a 4-door coupe in the style of ‘sensual sportiness’ and a completely new roomier interior. The car has not only become more ‘sophisticated’, but for the first time in its long (since 1990) history has acquired a hybrid version. However, the very first hybrid model in the world that used liquefied gas was also the Elantra released in 2009. The hybrid modification should appear in Israel soon, so we want to tell you more about it.

Until recently, Israeli buyers could purchase the Hyundai Elantra with a 1.6-liter petrol engine with 127 hp, coupled with a wedge-chain variator. Fuel consumption reaches 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle, while the acceleration to 100 km/h occurs in 11.6 seconds.

Exterior

The new Hyundai Elantra looks emotional and swift. It has a very memorable front face with a predatory stare and ‘eyebrows’ of the running lights, the wide radiator grille and the convex bumper, which completes the stylish, albeit controversial image. The rear end is decorated with spectacular taillights with a red stripe stretched across the entire width and a complex bumper.

The side view is even more interesting as the 2020/2021 Elantra has a 4-door coupe-style profile with a long sloping bonnet, a rearward-shifted interior and a very sloping rear window that merges into a short trunk. The embossed lines on the sides are reminiscent of the cutting of precious stones and emphasize the uniqueness of the car design.

Despite looking large, the seventh generation Elantra belongs to the compact segment. The sedan is 4,650 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,420 mm high. The wheelbase is 2,720 mm.

Interior

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra interior has become roomier. The seats now have a lower position. The interior is finished with decent materials and decorated in the European style. The car features a 4-spoke multifunction steering wheel with a raised rim and a laconic clear air conditioning unit. The driver’s area is accentuated. Here you can see a pair of combined 10.25-inch displays, one works as a dashboard, while the other ensures the operation of the multimedia system. However, as standard, the new Elantra has instruments with an analog speedometer and an 8-inch screen of the media system with buttons and handles on the sides.

The sedan is 5-seater. The front seats have a well-defined side profile, wide adjustment ranges and heating. The rear passengers are offered a spacious backseat with three headrests and a folding armrest in the center. The Elantra’s trunk can hold up to 474 liters of luggage, and it can be further increased by folding one or two sections of the backseat.

Powertrains

The hybrid version of the 2021/2022 Hyundai Elantra we are waiting for in Israel uses a 1.6-liter GDI petrol direct injection engine with a 44-horsepower electric motor built into a 6-speed double-clutch semi-automatic transmission. Another component is a 1.32 kWh lithium-ion battery. The total output of the powertrain is 141 hp and 264 Nm of torque. The hybrid Elantra can run on pure electric traction, but it cannot be recharged from a regular outlet. The range is not great at all, and the manufacturer does not even indicate it.

This model is very different from the rechargeable Elantra for China, which has a larger battery and a fuel consumption of 1 liter per 100 km. A global car has a fuel consumption of less than 4.7 liters per 100 km (7.1 liters for a petrol version). The hybrid Elantra is distinguished by a rear independent suspension (other versions have a simple ‘beam’). The front axle has a MacPherson strut independent suspension. The car is equipped with an electric power steering, disc brakes (ventilated at the front), as well as ABS, EBD and other modern electronics.

Equipment

In September 2021, this car wasn’t available on the Israeli market, so we will describe the top-end trim level of the global model. It includes six airbags, full LED optics, dual-zone climate control, heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, leather trim, Bose sound system, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring system, automatic braking system, etc. The options also include sound system and microclimate voice control, 64-color interior lighting and the Digital Key function, which allows you to use a smartphone with an NFC tag and a special application installed to unlock the car and start the engine. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless protocols are standard.

In your opinion, is there any point in hybrid cars if the fuel economy is not so significant?
