2020 Rolls-Royce Ghost Sedan. The 2nd generation

Rolls-Royce Ghost 2020. Bodywork, Exterior. Sedan Long, 2 generation

The first generation Ghost received positive customer feedback as a beautiful and technologically advanced car. The second generation has been significantly redesigned. In particular, the manufacturer has elaborated the suspension and interior. All changes were introduced within the framework of the Post Opulent concept. That is, luxury is much more than that… The rich have their own quirks. Still, it would be nice to know how it is. Let’s find out more about the new 2020 Rolls-Royce Ghost.

Positioning

In 2020, the British company unveiled the second generation Ghost luxury sedan. The first generation, released ten years earlier, became the most successful car in the brand’s 100 years of history. A change in Rolls-Royce’s strategy contributed to the high sales figures. Thus, if earlier the company offered cars exclusively for those who loved driving with a personal driver, then the new Ghost became the model best suitable for independent driving.

This is how the company acquired new active customers who were interested not only in the comfortable interior, but also in the driving characteristics. Rolls-Royce has conducted a research revealing a change in the way customers use the luxury sedan. It has been discovered that people prefer driving personally even such models as the Ghost with a longer wheelbase, which implied a hired driver. By the way, Rolls-Royce analysts were surprised to note that the classic Ghost executive sedan proved to be an excellent family car.

Exterior

The second generation Ghost is made in accordance with the Post Opulent concept of minimalism. And whatever you think about it, it means certain abandonment of the excesses of the land luxury yacht style that was characteristic of the previous generation. The 2020 Rolls-Royce Ghost represents an evolved understanding of luxury, defined by minimalism and well-defined lines, luxury designed for true connoisseurs who cannot be fooled by ostentatious splendor of forms.

Each exterior detail was developed separately and meticulously. For example, the 20 LEDs under the top grille were slightly brighter than they were supposed to during the development. Inspired by the Post Opulent’s aesthetics, the brand’s engineering team hand-cleaned the rear of the metal radiator grilles, making them slightly less reflective and achieving the desired noble shine.

Rolls-Royce analysts were surprised to note that the classic Ghost executive sedan proved to be an excellent family car.

The front face of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost is a testament to the designers' obsession with minimalism and compactness. This is a single integral space, each element of which is placed exactly where it is supposed to be. The centerline of the body is flawlessly straight to emphasize the car length. The lower ‘waterline’ makes the sedan look huge, but not bulky, while light and forward-looking. The outer casing is made in the form of a single inseparable element, smoothly flowing from the A-pillar to the roof and back to the rear.

Engine and suspension

The 2020/2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost is powered by a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine with 563 hp or 420 kW and 850 Nm of torque, accompanied by an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5 ton sedan accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

The Ghost is built on Rolls-Royce’s patented aluminum space frame, which also underpins its Phantom flagship and the Cullinan SUV. The frame has been modified to provide four-wheel drive. The engine is positioned above the front axle to achieve an optimal 50/50 weight distribution. The total length of the second generation Ghost compared to the first generation has increased by 89 mm to 5,546 mm, and its overall width has grown by 30 mm to 1,978 mm.

Engineers have completely redesigned the car’s suspension, making it even and flat. They have also installed the world’s first shock-absorber unit with upper arms above the front suspension, Flagbearer system with cameras for reading road information, which pre-adapts the suspension to the road surface, and more. These and other new suspension elements, some of which are installed on a production car for the first time in history, are controlled as one unit within the Planar system.

Interior

The new Ghost has everything that the automotive industry has created for the maximally comfortable interior. We’d like to note such an outstanding option, as the MEPS micro-environment cleaning system. Air filtration technology features highly sensitive contaminant detection sensors that automatically switch fresh air intakes to recirculation mode if unacceptable levels of airborne contaminants are detected. All the air in the passenger compartment passes through a nanofiber filter capable of removing nearly all ultrafine particles from the microenvironment in less than two minutes.

The acoustical comfort in the passenger compartment has also been harmonized. Rolls-Royce engineers have experimentally found that a completely silent interior can actually disorient the driver. And they have created a constant ‘whisper’ inside, a soft sound, not even a sound, but a note. To achieve this, each (!) component of the car is tuned so that together they emit sounds of a common resonant frequency. For example, seat frames resonate at a different frequency from the body, so damping devices are designed to reduce the noise to a single note. The trunk with a volume of 0.5 cubic meters should produce a low frequency, which can be felt at highway speeds, which is ensured by the special elements placed under the rear shelf to divert unnecessary sound waves… All this and much more has been done so that the passenger experiences a sense of serenity and tranquility. And bliss…

The new Ghost has everything that the automotive industry has created for the maximally comfortable interior.

Of special interest is the Ghost’s sound system. The powerful amplifier drives 18 channels (one for each speaker), delivering 1,300W of output power. Optimization technology and magnesium ceramic cones ensure minimal sound changes with outstanding frequency response. These devices are positioned so that the ceiling of the car acts like one large speaker. Despite the huge number of available options, the interior of the new Ghost is inspired by minimalist luxury. Everything that could be hidden is hidden, and you won’t find any unnecessary details and superficial decorations here.

Assistants

The new Rolls-Royce Ghost is a constructively safe luxury sedan featuring all modern safety equipment. Today it is the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce. It has:

  • LED and laser headlights with an illumination range of more than 600 m;
  • day and night sensors warning of pedestrians and other creatures in the direction of travel;
  • device that invites the driver to concentrate;
  • four-camera system with panoramic view, all-round view and bird’s-eye view;
  • active cruise control;
  • collision warning system;
  • cross traffic warning system;
  • lane departure and lane change warning;
  • high-resolution projection display 7×3;
  • Wi-Fi access point.

The car also has an autonomous parking system, various state-of-the-art navigation and entertainment systems and much more plus something else (or pretty much everything) that Rolls-Royce will install at the customer’s request.
