The new Lexus LX 600, which was expected to appear soon after the debut of the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, was unveiled on October 13, 2021 in the three target markets, including Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The flagship of the Japanese brand is now more different from the Toyota Land Cruiser. The presentation of the new Lexus LX took place at Moscow’s Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, an incredibly fashionable place. After all, Russia is a priority market, as about every tenth LX is sold there. The new generation Lexus LX can be expected at dealerships in February 2022.

The new generation is the fourth. The model has been produced for 25 years and is sold in 50 markets around the world. This circumstance and the high quality of the vehicle allowed it to win the hearts of buyers more than half a million times – that’s how many vehicles of different generations were sold. The vehicle is traditionally a luxury version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. Both SUVs are not officially supplied to Israel.

Important

Let’s compare the new model with the Toyota

The new Lexus LX has switched to the GA-F modular platform, which is 200 kg lighter, 20% stiffer and has a lower center of gravity. The manufacturer has not changed the distance between the axles even once since the launch of the original model in 1995, and the wheelbase is still 2,850 mm. The angles of approach, departure and ramp are the same as in the third generation SUV.

As before, the Lexus SUV has a lot in common with the Toyota Land Cruiser, so its general portrait was predictable. The same frame, the same engines and transmission. Both have the same wheelbase length and geometric off-road capabilities: approach and departure angles, ramp angle, and ground clearance, which is a respectable 225 mm. The body of both vehicles is mostly aluminum, but the exterior design differs markedly at the same dimensions. As always, the vehicle justifies the title of an SUV: there is a low range and a Crawl control function, which is an off-road mode in which the vehicle switches to crawling.

The rear end differs from that of the Toyota Land Cruiser. The designers have made the slope of the fifth door more prominent and replaced the logo with a stylized ‘L’ by a large ‘Lexus’ inscription. The interior is also different: the two floors of front-panel displays follow Lexus' Tazuna concept (translated as ‘reins’), which is designed to provide ‘an inextricable connection between driver and vehicle’. Therefore, the location of all organs and switches allows the driver to reach them with their hand without bending over.

Exterior

The new Lexus LX features a proprietary spindle-shaped grille, new head optics with BladeScan adaptive high-beam control system. There is now the brand name on the tailgate instead of the brand logo, and the taillights are connected by an LED jumper according to the latest fashion. In profile, the LX is similar to the Land Cruiser, but with slightly different glass lines and rear pillars.

Engines

The new model has inherited its powertrains from the Land Cruiser: a 3.5-liter V6 biturbo petrol engine with 415 hp and a torque of 650 Nm (it is also installed on the LS 500 sedan). On the new Lexus LX 600, the engine produces 400 hp and 650 Nm of torque. The diesel version of the LX 500d is equipped with a 3.3 liter unit (300 hp and 700 Nm, the engine produces 700 Newtons already at 1,600 rpm). There is only one 10-speed automatic gearbox. Note the new, lighter suspension with Active Height Control (AHC). In general, compared to the previous generation, the new SUV has lost 200 kg of weight.

Equipment

The equipment of the 2021/2022 Lexus LX 600 is clearly more diverse than that of the Toyota brother. The entry-level version has everything the Land Cruiser offers as optional equipment. It comes with surround cameras, LED headlights with BladeScan AHS adaptive control system, the award-winning Mark Levinson Premium Surround 25-speaker sound system, advanced collision avoidance with emergency steering, the most advanced lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control with speed control when cornering. The list of options includes the electronic Multi-Terrain Monitor system, which projects the areas under the front and rear of the vehicle onto the screen, and fingerprint engine start. Two monitors on the front panel of the Lexus are also clearly different from the Land Cruiser: the upper, 12.3-inch monitor is designed for navigation, general vehicle adjustment and the Multi-terrain Monitor assistant (monitors the space under the bottom and in the area of the wheels); the lower 7-inch monitor is responsible for climate control and displays the status of the driving mode selection system, which, like the Land Cruiser 300, now has Auto and Deep Snow settings.

VIP version

The manufacturer has also announced a super-luxurious 4-seater Ultra Luxury version with two separate seats in the second row that tilt up to 48 degrees. Their backrests can be adjusted to give the body a reclining position, and the front passenger seat can be folded down to increase the space in front of the seat by up to 1.2 meters. There are also passenger footrests and four air ducts. The center armrest features a touchscreen for controlling comfort functions, and the front seat backrests feature entertainment screens (standard).
