The Toyota Highlander is a mid-size SUV manufactured by Toyota (Japan) since 2000. Both front and all-wheel drive versions are available. There is also a hybrid version. In 2021, Israeli buyers can purchase the fourth generation of the 2020 SUV.

The 2020 5-door SUV is delivered to Israel in a 7-seater variant exclusively as a hybrid modification with all-wheel drive. It is 4,966 mm long, 1,930 mm wide and 1,755 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. The trunk volume varies from 454 liters (minimum) to 1,882 liters (maximum).

Distinctive features

According to the manufacturer, the new fourth generation Toyota Highlander is a perfect seven-seat family SUV. The transition to the new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform with more high-strength steels and increased torsional stiffness has improved all key characteristics of the vehicle, from driving comfort and handling to safety and sound insulation. The new Highlander has become larger and acquired a new exterior that combines brutality and elegance. Now the SUV is equipped with the innovative Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD, with two electromagnetic clutches on the rear axle, as well as the Multi Terrain Select driving mode system.

Unlike most E-SUV manufacturers that gravitate to plug-in hybrid systems such as PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid), Toyota engineers have equipped the new Highlander Hybrid with a signature fourth-generation self-charging hybrid system. It consists of a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter D-4S petrol engine and two electric motors (one on each axle), the rear of which powers the AWD-i (intelligent all-wheel drive) system. Plus, there is a nickel-metal hydride rechargeable battery under the second-row seats.

The vehicle features diverse modern options, including LED front and rear optics, an electric panoramic roof, a multimedia system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 11-speaker JBL audio system, a head-up display and much more. The expanded Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 ensures active safety of the new Highlander, which has been recognized as one of the safest vehicles on the market by the results of independent safety tests.

Modifications

In Israeli, the new 2020/2021 Highlander is available in two versions: E-MOTION and E-XCLUSIVE. Both are hybrid and all-wheel drive. The hybrid version features a separate electric motor that transfers torque to the rear wheels. The powertrain generates a total of 248 hp. It consists of a 2.5-liter petrol engine, two electric motors and a compact battery pack under the rear seats. The maximum speed amounts to 180 km/h, while the acceleration to 100 km occurs in 8.3 seconds. The SUV is also capable of driving in an all-electric mode at speeds up to 125 km/h. Fuel consumption is 6.9 liters per 100 km in a combined mode. All SUV models are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Trim levels

All models destined for the Israeli market have folding rear seats and a third rear headrest. The expensive trim level comes with tinted windows and a panoramic roof, leather interior, front and rear parking sensors.

The basic equipment of the 2020/2021 Toyota Highlander includes seven airbags, including the driver’s knee and window ones (curtains). Anti-lock braking system and electronic stability program (ESP), brake assist (BAS, EBD, EBA) and automatic slip regulation (ASR), vehicle stability management (VSM), collision avoidance system, lane keeping assist and blind spot monitoring system, road sign assist and a driver fatigue sensor are included in the basic options and ensure your safety.

The 2021 Toyota Highlander comes standard with the adaptive cruise control, Carplay and Android Auto multimedia system, heated front seats, 2-zone climate control, multifunction steering wheel, push-button start, adaptive lighting, light and rain sensors.
